Solved gaming PC with 2 caviar greens, looking to upgrade

I changed my mind and ordered a Black instead. At the very least, the longer warranty should cover me

That setup in my profile is outdated. Right now I have 16 GB RAM and an i7 cpu. As for SSD, I don't know if I want to pay more for generally less space when I regularly use huge amounts of space on videos and graphics files (as well as backups for several other older hard drives).

You can get a 250Gb for about 130.00 but depending on where you are buying from also keep in mind the 840 Evo's are cheaper and run just as fast as the renewed 850 evo and it will be enough for a few installed games and you can take the other 2 drives and use them as back up's once you install a SSD you will not notice the other drive being slower it will run the games about the same speed only difference is load times with a SSD that is all

Samsung 840 EVOs have a three year warranty; the 850 EVOs, five years. You have to decide how much that added warranty is worth to you. Of course, if you had money to burn and wanted the maximum warranty possible, the Samsung 850 PROs have a ten year warranty (I don't recommend getting it just for the warranty because, in ten years, the 850 Pros will be antiques compatible with very little else).

I picked the 128GB 840 PRO for my desktop machine since it runs 24/7 (the 850 PROs weren't out back then). If I were building the machine today, I would get a 128GB 850 Pro (I'm not a gamer so 128GB is plenty big for me). I put 500GB 840 EVOs in my notebooks (again, the 850s weren't out yet when I got them) since they had room for only one drive and I need that much room for both the system/programs and data partitions but I didn't need the durability of the 840 Pros since the machines are primarily spares for my desktop and for when I travel (one is a spare for the other one).

You should be very happy with the Blacks, I've been using them for years and like they way they perform. Though I've got multiple SSD's in my system, I game off my 2TB WD Black. No issues. The only big advantage to gaming off the SSD is load times. Actual game performance isn't going to be significantly different between an SSD and traditional HD.

Good luck with the Caviar Black.

Peace

I totally agree. The WD Blacks are excellent drives.
