Garbled email

Here is a challenge
I have Windows 7 with IE8 and use MS Office 2003 MS Outlook for my email send and receive.
My wife has Windows XP with IE6 and uses MS Office 2003 MS Outlook for her email send and receive.
A mutual friend sends us emails to bcc, if it is email text only, we both receive OK. However, if the email contains a link to a website, my email has several pages of garbled data as shown below and my wife receives it OK. If the email is sent TO: or cc:, no problem for either one of us, only when sent bcc:
Any Ideas?

I do not understand the instructions. I opened the message, then View, Options and beside Internet Headers: It just showed the same garbled message as it does in MS Outlook. What am I doing wrong?

Interesting - I have the exact same problem. A friend has me on his (rather large) distribution list and ever since I switched to a new PC running Windows 7, the email has been completely messed up. Only this morning did we narrow it down to the Bcc: line - everything comes in fine if he sends me the exact same message but my email is on the To: line. Googling led me to your post. Did you resolve your issue yet? I'm about to take a look at the link from Bill2 (thanks for the link!).

I have learned more! I have the problem when the the email has no "To" nor a "cc" and I am "bcc." It fails where I am the only address if multiple "bcc" addresses.

Still no solution but I can repeat the problem.

This one talks about a similar problem and has a reply from a Microsoft Outlook person that indicates it is a known problem (as of 05/02/08) and is being worked on.


Outlook BCC problem in Outlook General


Similar problem description. One of the replies to this one had a link to a hot fix from Microsoft that solved the problem for at least one user. The link is:

Note that the fix is for Outlook 2003. I downloaded the hot fix and tried to install it myself but was unsuccessful - maybe you'll have better luck if you try it. There were no installation instructions with the hot fix so I had to fumble around a bit. Turns out you need to run the downloaded executable and decompress the files to a temporary, empty directory. This will give you another executable along with a CAB folder. Run that executable and you finally get two files: OUTLOOK.msp and OUTLOOK_readme.txt. The readme indicates that all you have to do is double click on the *.msp file and Windows Installer will automatically install it. When I try I get a popup that says it can't find the application (which is in \Program Files (x86) not \Program Files). I posted about the installation problem in Windows 7 Application Compatibility Forum and got lots of views but no replies. If you try the patch and are successful, I'd like to hear about it.

Thanks. I'll look into it. In the description of the hotfix, it talks about the "platform" being x86. What does that mean? Could that be the problem with the compatibility?

Seems like Microsoft should update their "Service Pack" to include this fix.

I'm running a 64-bit system. Windows 7 (64-bit) distinguishes between 64-bit applications, which are placed in \Program Files, and 32-bit applications running in compatibility mode, which are placed in \Program Files (x86). If you haven't run into "x86" before I'm guessing that you're running a 32-bit system in which case you may have better luck installing the hot fix than I did.

I contacted Microsoft directly via US postal Service and received responses. After a couple of weeks I was informed it was a security issue for people sending emails without a TO or CC email adress and all the email addresses in bcc. If the email has a email address in TO, then this will work. Microsoft had this same problem with Vista and MS office 2003 and they repaired it. I was told they probably would not repair the problem since MS Office 2007 and MS Office 2010 were released and the problem does not occur with them.
I was disappointed, but I understand the reasoning.
But, then lo and belold I started getting email from people sending with no TO or BC, but sending bcc. So maybe they fixed the problem and I got it with an automatic update.
