Solved Garmin Updates

I did not know the best place for this, please move it if it is better elsewhere.

I have been experiencing a struggle trying to download Garmin updates for my Nuvi 50 LM. Firefox will not allow this, here is the text of the message from FF whenever I try to download garmin updates: -
"The owner of download.garmin.com has configured their website improperly. To protect your information from being stolen, Firefox has not connected to this website."

I get the same reaction from Chrome. Apparently only Internet Explorer can be used to download garmin updates. I refuse to use IE as I know it is inherently unsafe. If other browsers are stopping garmin in the same way, there must be something wrong. I have contacted both Firefox Help and Garmin. FF have suggested several solutions, none of which work, but it is obviously not Firefox causing the problem. I have given Garmin the details above and informed them that they need to correctly configure their website. I bought my Nuvi 3 years ago, with Lifetime Free Updates. That looks good now, doesn't it?

Dou you have any kind of script blocker/ content blocker or cross browser content blocker software? What's your DNS? Do you use a proxy?

RE: Chrome - I don't use it. I have SRWare Iron portable and SlimJet portable. They refuse to download from Garnin with no error messages.

Suggest backing up FF bookmarks and extensions then to a full uninstall followed by a fresh install.

Seems to be a problem your end. The direct download link works for me in all browsers and I have quite a few browsers.

If you've got the option in BitDefender to temporarily turn of SSL scanning - try that.

What to do when Security Certificates cannot be verified/installed

Is Firefox up to date? (Latest version)

Sorry I can't help with Chrome as I will not use it.

See if you get the same problem using Cyberfox Portable.

I sorted this eventually with assistance from 2 very good Garmin operatives. Quote from their Emails:

"Internet Explorer is the required browser for downloads of this kind, so please continue using Internet explorer."

Problem: I had not used IE for a long time. Tried accessing it and it was corrupted, reminding me of the malware attack that I endured so long ago. Trying to uninstall it was a real PITA, it is of course a Windows Update and does not show in Control Panel -> Prog's & Features. Uninstalled it by Command Prompt in wusa (Windows Update Standalone Installer) and reinstalled IE. This was all complicated by the amount of time it took to finally uninstall IE.

I was then able to install Garmin Express, followed by 2 hours of Garmin updates. Callender, your last reply reminded me to update my Spec's: I don't have Bitdefender, having changed to Kaspersky. Thanks for your advice, however FF is up to date at 49.01 and the problem is not concerned with Security Certification. I am informed by a Networking & Security engineer that the problem is down to the continuing use of outdated software and Java, by Garmin. Quote:

"...they are using NPAPI that goes right back to 1997's Netscape 4. It uses Java and has all sorts of security issues."

So it seems that Firefox was actually carrying out its work correctly, in blocking my access. The fact that IE can deal with this, may be down to Microsoft killing off Netscape during the 'Browser wars' of the 90's. The supreme irony is that Netscape was revived again as Firefox, which has now removed the ancient NPAPI software. What goes around,....

Result is that I now have access to Garmin Express and my Lifetime Free Updates. I have also learned a lot during this process, which as a 71 year old makes me more than ever convinced that we are never too old to learn something new.
