Hi everyone I have a Gateway Mx7118 laptop and it doesn't seem the Windows 7 recognizes the videocard. I downloaded and installed Catalyst suite from ATI's website but the system still reverts back to 'Standard VGA Graphics Adapter". Can someone tell me if there are drivers compatible with this system and any extra steps to replace the default graphics adapter?

iztel, welcome to the forums.

The reason that the Catalyst suite didn't install is there is no support in it for the chipset or video adapter in your laptop (ATI RS480M and Xpress 200M), which have both be relegated to legacy status and as such there will be no Windows 7 drivers for them. Also means that Gateway will never have anythng as they have to get the drivers from ATI.

You can try the Legacy driver from ATI,

ATI Catalyst™ Legacy Display Driver

no promises it will work as you have a laptop, but it does work for the desktop products it supports quite well in Windows 7.

Thanks Stormy.

I'm happy albeit a bit embarrassed to say that I went into start - all programs - windows updates and was pleasently surprised to see my videocard driver as one of the recommended drivers. I updated my system restarted and now my graphics card is fully installed, aero effects working and I bumped up my resolution. After months of trying to migrate over to Ubuntu and having tons of software issues it's a breath of fresh air that windows has done some things to make things easy again.
