Welcome to Seven Forums. You may want to follow this driver guide to install a modded driver for your laptop as some manufacturers modify their .inf files for their graphics cards.
NVIDIA MobilityModder
The mod tool can be found at the bottom of the page.

Once you have modded the graphics driver you may want to go to device manager>display adapter> update driver software>browse my computer> have disk> browse to where you have the driver file located and install from their by clicking the setup.exe file. If this won't work you might want to try following the same steps then click or double click the .inf file.

Got me further but when i click on update driver>browse computer>have disk> then browse for the file ive been selected nvam.inf but there are atleast another 20 with diferent names, it then shows about 8-10 8400gt drivers that i can install so i select one and click install, gets so far then sais its not for this operating system? yes i did download the windows 7/vista 32bit driver setup file from nvidia ;)

One word with what is wrong, Sony. They are one of a few (the others are Toshiba and Panasonic I believe) that won't allow for the use of reference video drivers from either Nvidia or AMD, hence why modded INF's are required to get them to install.

As far as modding the INF goes, not sure how well Mobility Modder will work with the latest drivers, but seeing as it hasn't been updated in over a year it probably doesn't work (or work properly) with the latest drivers. A better option of modded Nvidia laptop drivers is to get them from here,

NVIDIA & Laptop News | Latest NVIDIA drivers and related news | laptopvideo2go.com

where they come with the INF already modded.

Sounds like you've run into a problem that's common in laptops: Sony may have used a nonstandard device ID for the onboard graphics.

Something that may work: install the Vista drivers:

VAIO : Sony Europe

They'll probably function under Win7 without any additional work. Once they are installed, you'll probably receive newer drivers through Windows Update, and you may be able to download and install the latest drivers directly from nVidia.

I went through that with my cheap Compaq laptop, with 8200M graphics.
