96.85 is the driver comes with Windows Update for FX 5200 cards. The problem is this driver makes my computer freeze at random times. For full details This Thread.

I've found 97.34 and 98.16 are also compatible and enable Aero. However all of those cause my system lock up as told in the linked thread. I am using 169.21 Forceware which is a XP driver and that can't support Aero interface.

Is it a way to combine this two working and not working drivers? Like modded INFs?

Any help would be appricated.

Hi.

Your problem really is that your motherboard is only a 1x AGP board and that is completely weak for running Windows 7. Even 4x AGP is not so well but can work fine.

Now for the worse news. Your chipset is so old that it is not even supported on Windows Vista. That fact makes it impossible to do anything at all.

Hardware upgrade, meaning a completely new system, is needed for you to run Windows 7 with graphics hardware acceleration.

If you really can't afford that and also feel confident in rebuilding your system, look to purchase the same motherboard as me along with a new AGP video card like the ATI 4xxx series. It will be compatible with your existing psu, cpu and ram.

Hi. Thanks for the reply.

Compatibility checker said that I could install Windows 7. That's why I installed. Besides, there is a chipset driver update for my chipset dated 2007. Default driver coming with Windows 7 is 2006 dated. Would it be a cure?

Do you have any exclamation points in the device manager? Post a screenshot of it/them if so.

Actually, you could do this anyhow for system devices section maximized.

You need 256mb of dedicated video ram to run the aero interface...

Only 128 MB video RAM required for Aero. (64 for Vista)

Ya, I was sleepy here. I took the 1x AGP slot the wrong way on the website to mean the speed instead of slot count.

His motherboard is APG x4 BIOSTAR :: U8668-D :: Specification

Microsoft doesnt say how much win7 require video ram. But for sure go to bios and assign 128 MB in agp aperture size.

Have you tried that driver? FX 5200 Vista Driver - Software Driver Download

Yes I've tried that driver, too. This is the driver comes with Windows Update. I know people who runs Windows 7 with the exact same graphic card.

Hi. Thanks for the reply.

No there is no exclamation point in the device manager. I've installed latest Chipset drivers (4in1 one) which include AGP driver, too. And yes my motherboard supports 4x AGP.

My system, eventhough it is a very old one, fits with the minumun system requirements. It can run Aero, too. However there is a freezing/lock up problem. And I think that it is due to Direct3D feature, hardware acceleration.

Is it a way of stopping Hardware Acceleration? I can't even play Chess Titans. :P

In the bios, listen to Sirdan and set it to AGP Aperature = 128 MB. (Him and I are old school with the AGP haha.)

Disable fast writes as a test. If good, leave it as this.

Go for the gusto and set the bottom 3 to enabled. Test. If no good, set fast writing to disabled. Test.

(While testing, make sure that the video driver is installed well. Look in the device manager. If it says standard vga, driver not installed.)

I am using 169.21 Forceware, which is XP driver that naturally can't run Aero, it is not listed as Standard VGA. Shall I install problematic-can-run-Aero-but-makes-computer-freeze driver (96.85 or 97.34 or 98.16) to test?

Install this driver as follows:

Run it and let it extract to C:\NVIDIA

Immediately after the installer is done doing that, close the installer. Go to device manager and right click on video card. Update driver software. Browse. Let me pick. Have disk. Browse. Now double click on the .inf somewhere in C:\NVIDIA. Hit ok then hit next and let it install.

Reboot after install. Try out different bios settings as I previously said to in last post.

Dude, it is weird but IT WORKED. I am still cautious though. I haven't changed BIOS settings yet. I've installed the driver as the way you told. I restarted. No Aero though. I checked Device Manager. Driver seems to be updated. I played one hand Chess Titans without any freezing nor lag. I restarted again. Still no Aero. I checked Personalization Menu. I changed to another Aero theme. AERO here! I am still cautious. I played 1 hand Chess Titans. No freezing. HOWEVER a little sound lag as it happened my first 98.65 driver experience.

When I first installed Windows 7, after Standard VGA default driver installed, Windows Update found 96.85 itself and updated to it. I used Aero well for 2 days but only some sound lag with Chess Titans as happening now! Then freezing started. I hope this time it won't happen.

Please do not close this thread in case freezing might happen again. Just to be cautious.

Thanks for the help my friends!

You're welcome. Well, go ahead and enable those bios settings I said. The worst that can happen is that it won't work well and you can easily change back. If you do enable, it will increase performance by a good margin. (No need to be cautious with this. It's safe to try out.)

As for the sound - right click on it in the device manager. Properties. Details tab. Change dropdown to hardware ids. Copy and paste the results here. I'll see if there's a good driver to try to run.

Your sound issue may actually be caused by some cpu throttling in the bios or software that starts with Windows. Look into that if you can. Usually called cool n quiet, speedstep or some things like that.
