I'm getting random BSOD usually on the main menu of DotA 2. Sometimes my laptop restarts without any reason.. Sometimes in first boot of my laptop im getting black screen then I need to hard reset up to 4 times, then it will launch windows start up repair to have system restore. I'm not getting these for the past few days... I also reformat my laptop and still getting BSOD for opening DotA 2 on first attempt. Is it my ram/gpu/mobo? I just want to know if its a hardware problem or software so that I can return my laptop to the shop where i bought it.

7 months old laptop. bought it last July 2011. 1 year warranty.

My Laptop Specs
Model: ASUS N43SL
Processor i5 2.30GHz
RAM: 8GB Gskill 1333MHz
Video Card: GT540m
Nvidia version: 285.62
HDD: ST9500325AS
Windows: Windows 7 64bit Ultimate SP1

Here is my minidump. I hope you can help me so that I can return this to ASUS. Pls give me some advice.

Thanks in advance!

Hello, welcome to SevenForums!

The dump you've attached points to memory corruption, most likely caused by a driver but it can be bad RAM as well.

Two tests I'd like you to run, Memtest and then Driver Verifier if Memtest comes back clean.

Memtest:

Read the following to test your memory for errors.

Driver Verifier:

Read the following to enable Driver Verifier. Use Driver Second if Memtest finds nothing, as it's likely a software / driver issue, we just aren't being told what it is, and hopefully Driver Verifier will than force a crash if it finds the violating driver.

Before enabling Driver Verifier, my recommendation is to set a backup / restore point as in severe cases Driver Verifier can break your Windows. If you have difficulty getting into Windows, boot into Safe Mode and disable Driver Verifier there.

What exactly do you mean it stops, has it frozen? It takes a little while to complete just one pass, if it's not frozen and you can see the % of the test rising, it is fine. If it has frozen, that's not good and there is an issue with your RAM, possibly voltages & timings related or just bad RAM itself.

To see if it's frozen try and hit the C key (configuration in memtest) and see if anything happens. Also, the "Test: %" should be moving, if it's not... most likely frozen.

I rerun the test and froze at pass 3 23 percent. Before I buy a new one is it possible the motherboard/slots of the ram has been damaged? What would be the best option about this? Is their any test for videocard/motherboard? Just to make sure that the motherboard/graphics card is ok and only the ram have been damaged. thanks..

Great question! Yes, it is always a possibility that the DIMM slots are the issue and not the RAM itself. Do you have any other slots to test the RAM in? If so, I'd recommend that before RMA'ing the memory itself.

My laptop have only 2 slots, each of my ram is 4gb. How will I test it? Just wondering if the ram is the only perpetrator, why do I get random crash/bsod/laptop restarts? Using my laptop right now and not getting any crash/bsod. When I run DotA 2 or first time boot high chances of bsod/laptop restarts/crash.

Because when you're idle the memory isn't being stressed, but when you run an application that puts load onto the memory, it stresses the memory and if the memory is unstable / bad, it will cause a BSOD.

I highly doubt the DIMM slots themselves are the culprit, so I'd recommend replacing the memory first.
