Getting router to work in W7

Ok I need to do this network & sharing for an old computer that can't go higher then XP. But my router has always been maintained by a friend who has (against his friend urged him not to) moved cross country.. So to me the router & networking is just magic.. But it is up to me to make it work.

I have a linkSys router.. Attached to a computer now using W7.. Hookup is in such a way that if the router is disconnected the internet is dead even to the main computer..

Old computer can no longer see anything provided by main computer (printer or harddrives).. But the router seems to be working fine to provide internet & email, and connection to another computer that has yet to go through the W7 upgrade.

With no instructions & just guessing this is how far I got with the network & sharing on W7. I got to control panel, Network & sharing center, setup a new connection, setup a new network.. then it searches for a router.

Now I get stuck.. No router pops up..

so I go for new software.. I think it wants to just update the established connection.
It tells me to plug in an IP address into my IE address bar (like I was doing an FTP).. then leave username blank and it says put in my password but the default is admin.
I tried my password.. It reads "Warning this server is requesting that your username & pswd be sent in an insecure manner. with an "OK" & Cancel.. I say "OK"... and it just returns to the username/pswd screen. If I try their pswd of admin.. It says "unauthorized.. authorization Required."..

So am I even on the right track?? Where to go from here?

You can reset the router admin password (whatever your friend has set it to). There should be a reset button (and i believe the router needs to be connected to a turned on machine). Once it's reset the id/password should be Admin/ no password (blank).

Try this frist and see if you can cable connect to the router's web console.

I read about the reset, and last night in desperation I went looking for it.. (actually the default is username: blank pswd: admin.. mine is username: blank pswd: (different)..

But I could not find the reset button.. I checked every raise & dip..

Later I thought this is a security issue.. This "Warning" may be giving me a choice of "OK" or "Cancel" but either way it is not letting me have the deciding vote to ignore the security concerns.. I did not think changing the password would make any difference.

Plus, once I change the password the internet & email would cease on the laptops.. Ever try dealing with a teenage college kid that is without internet & email?? Bad news!! (his laptop will be upgraded to W7 but not until the main computer is successfully upgraded)).. So I would need to reset the password, I am not sure how to do that, and could I if I can't get past the security issue.

I could reset his computer to pswd admin.. But leaving that pswd as a default is a security risk.

So I am hesitant.. Why do you think this would work to get past the security issue?

The fact that your w7 machine cannot detect your network which is broadcast by your router is an issue you need to solve. It's not w7, rather possibly a router setting that your friend may have imposed. I do not know, if there if this is the case, and if you do not know yourself than you can do what i suggested. Reset your router and re-setup your network. I do not believe if a router is properly setup, w7 cannot detect it.

Note: passwords can be setup anytime after you reset the router. i'm not telling you to leave the password as default.

Ok router update is done.. But still have issues.

It was me in my cluelessness. What I thought was my pswd was my SSID: and I had a set username/pswd. When I used it the upgrade area opened up. If I am correct, the update was directly to the router, and I don't need to do that when rebuilding the computer.. Correct?

I went back to the control panel, Network & sharing center, setup a new connection, setup a new network.. then it searches for a router.

Still it never finds the router, but the router is up and connecting to the two laptops in the house, and now is up on the latest software..

So now what?

But I never did reset it.. I couldn't find the reset button.. and even if I did find it I had worries over resetting it, I asked some questions (above) but b4 anyone responded, I figured out the true username & password that were set and I updated using those..

I still don't think I can find the reset button. it's a small enough box, but theres nothing that I can see.
