Gigabyte 7970 won't work.

Hey !

I recently bought new Gigabyte 7970 OC, but i can't get it work.

The problem is that when i try to boot with the card, all i get is just serval restarts, and black display saying: "No input signal" My Windows 7 Ultimate x64 won't boot.
Fan's of the card do spin.

I used to have Nvidia gt 440, and it worked fine, but i decided to upgrade to beter card.
I used few other cards for test:

Club Raedon HD 3450: Worked
Club Raedon HD 5450: Worked

Raedon X850 PRP: Worked
(I was rely surprised about that, cause that card is so old, and it has been in my brothers toy box last 2 years. :/ )

And, Gigabyte Radeon HD 7750: This card has a same problem.
But i get 7750 work, by setting my CPU and Memory to default frequency.
However, this card causes system crash sometimes, when computer is highly loaded. (Gaming) Also i get weird pixel storm in games.

With 7970 I have tried also CMOS clearing, and CPU underclocking. Still same prob.
And what comes to bad drivers, it doesn't mater cause i can't go even that far in booting.
Sadly i don't have mobo's POST alarm, or any led's in it.

I don't have another rig to test if that is faulty card. I don't even think that is faulty..


My guess is that my PSU can be faulty.
That because all low end card works properly, and little problems appear with 7750 (400w)
Other cards only draws around 300w

I really hope that i get 7970 work, before time go past it :/

Im using now 7750, and i did just, 10 seconds ago, get sudden black screen, where i saw my mouse, and it was blinking ?
Then i get message: "Google Crhome crashed, do you wanna restart it ?"

First thought for me as well was the PSU.

Try reseating the card and reconnecting the cables. you do need an 8pin connector for this card I think... (not sure of connectors yet)

If so, you might need a PSU that has an 8pin connector. right now it is underpowered.

6pin will give: 75W
8pin will give: 150W

card needs more power than it is getting I think. I am thinking this is the case. the PSU you have probably has enough, but it isn't getting to the card....

Yes, I'v reseated card, and i'm sure that power cables are connected.

I use 8 pin and 6+2 pin cables to power the card.

Ok good to know. didn't know if that would be the issue. I found other stuff that said 8 pin was necessary so thought it might be that.

Can you try booting with a Ubuntu LiveCD. might be driver issues from the previous cards? not sure here. other more knowledgable people will probably give better suggestions on this....

I have tried to boot with fresh hdd, and fresh Windows 8 on it.
I think that it's not caused by drivers, cause 7750 uses same drivers that 7970 do.
And sorry, i meant 6 + 6+2 pin connectors. But makes no difference.

I don't have linux, but i can get evaluation copy for test, if you think that's worth to test ?

I think only possibilities are faulty mobo (unimaginable) and PSU.

I think i need way to test that PSU, and also the card itself.

Does the PC display POST messages with the 7970?

Can you boot Windows in safe mode?

Still i believe that's a power issue of PSU.

Sorry never had that problem i didn't go through the whole post of this but if your getting multi restarts hardware related also you did reseat the gpu but have you tryed others in the same slot to see if it isn't just that card or a bad slot ?

The issue with these cards you speak of was crashing and driver failure which had to do with the card being underclocked users had to overclock the 2d part of the gpu to make it stable this is not the case it doesn't even show up either the card is no good or something is wrong with your board a endless boot look could be a multitude of reasons something could be installed in the wrong place for an example and make your machine do goofy things

Ps i did go back and read a little the PSU is more then enough seems to me your MB is the prblem because you mention it fails underload so it has to be the MB that is the issue here

can you list MB and CPU and at what timings ram etc because you have no specs filled out it would be so much easier to help you

First check out Solarstarshines suggestion to make sure it's not some loose components keeping the system from booting. That said...

This most definitely indicates a non-working card. Why is the question? That even if it was a driver issue, you would still get a Bios/Boot screen as video drivers aren't needed for that. No screen picture whatsoever indicates a dead or improperly functioning card.

That said, check BOTH outputs (DVI/HDMI) of the card just to make sure one isn't bad. If that doesn't work, check to see if the card is getting the proper power, and that connections are correct.

If all is good there, it is possible that you simply got a DOA (Dead On Arrival) card. It happens. Return it for a new one.
