I recently built a new PC for gaming and the gigabyte motherboard manual says it's expandable to 32G. I put 4x8G sticks and the computer shows 32G but says only 16G is usable. What's up?

Good call + 1

OP, if you want to use that extra 32 gig of RAM, you'll need to upgrade the OS.

Hopefully this serves as a lesson/warning to others the check their systems before spending money. In short, does your system qualify for the intended upgrade.

Peace

unless you're heavily into video editing and have a top notch ££££ cpu then 32gb of ram is pointless.. the benifit wont out weigh the cost.

I don't know, that depends on what you're doing. I mean if we want to call that, half the systems around here are pointless as most of them aren't even fulfilling half their potential. Do we really need unlocked CPU's or hexa-cores? More than 4 gig of RAM?

Based on the issue the OP is having, perhaps they should have done a bit more research before buying; outside of that, what's the harm in them getting as much RAM as their system can take?

Yup, if the OP wants 32GB, it's no one's job to talk them out of it, their choice.
