Internet analytics firm comScore is putting an end to any disputes about Gmail's dominance in the webmail market -- in case you were keeping scores. According to their traffic data for October, Google’s email service has finally overtaken Hotmail with 287.9 million unique worldwide visitors during the month versus 286.2 million for Hotmail.

Look back 5 years, and Hotmail would have been dominated the Mail service market completely, mostly because they were the days when everyone used to use MSN to speak to each other :p

I use Hotmail personally, I have a GMail account for YouTube, so I'm guessing the GMail numbers have increased so rapidly as they mention you have to create a GMail account in order to create a YouTube account, but I'm pretty sure that other Mail service providers also worked with creating a YouTube account

I personally have a gmail account but I use it sparingly since I think it's the worst email client I've ever used. It's mostly used in conjunction with my Google Play account, otherwise I don't use it to send/receive mail. I use Windows Live Mail and like it much better.

In order to have a Google Play account (app store for Android devices), you need to have a gmail account. I think a large portion of gmail's gain is because of that requirement.

If you need an upto date mail server you can't beat Gmail. Hotmail updates every 15 mins so not as good as Gmail. It speaks for itself which to use!

I hate gmail. Partly because it belongs to Google but mostly because its performance doesn't even come up to sucking on a good day.

My ISP outsourced its email server to Google and has a gmail proxy behind it. At least three times out of four, it takes minutes for my email client to find no mail or even send email on the gmail account.

Just this morning, I made a permanent redirection to another of my email accounts and turned off automatic lookup on the gmail based account. I have a possible 250 email accounts that I get for $5/month along with 2Gig of asp/aspx web space where I control the server settings. Email accounts on that server take a fraction of a second to do something where gmail can take minutes. The interesting thing is that it is so close to being free, I don't notice the difference in cost. However, I do notice the difference in the time it takes for nothing to happen.

Free is almost never cheap.

I've had a Hotmail account long before I had my Gmail one, I use them both in Windows Live Mail via POP3. I don't do web mail, my Hotmail is mainly for all things Microsoft related like Security newsletters, update notices etc.

My Gmail is tied in with my Facebook account and Google Plus, although to be honest I very rarely go to Google Plus these days.

I think I have enough email addy's including my ISP ones to be going on with for now, oh and they're all free ones as well. ;)

I prefer a web based email client since my email address won't be tied to an ISP. I can access my email from any computer using any ISP. I don't have to change my email address whenever I change my ISP.

I tried Gmail back in 2007 and didn't like it then. It felt clunky plus there's Google's reputation for nosiness.

I can't use HotMail because it will not run unless I have all my cookies permanently enabled. That is so not going to happen! It's my darned computer so I will determine what gets put on it.

That leaves Yahoo. It's less than great but the price is right. Yahoo is also nosy but, at least, it's not as bad as Google and I can block advertising and tracking cookies.

When I got my first pc, the ISP was AOL, so I used it's Email which I still have. Then I started using Live Messenger and needed a Hotmail account, still got it also. Being an inquisitive person, I got a Gmail account and immediately liked the part where I could keep or delete what & when I decided. What I didn't like was the limited tweaks (too many to name). Then I found I could use Gmail in WLM, it was like finding the legendary pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.
In the survey, I wonder how many who liked Gmal, use it in conjunction with WLM.

It's interesting to me that many people want to consolidate all of their email into a single client such as WLM like Roderunner mentioned above. I keep my various email accounts (Hotmail, gmail, yahoo, etc...) separate and prefer to log in to them separately.

You must be fairly new to the game then. Gmail didn't even come about until 2007 while Hotmail has been around since 1996. I actually have some emails saved in Hotmail that are dated from 1998.
