Good software to cut long mp3 files?

Those who know about music editing, could you give me a recommendation please?

I've recorded a few webradio concerts and opera transmissions. Now I've got one very large file for each. For my mp3 player I'd like to cut them into smaller pieces, cutting out the moderator's comments between acts and the applause from the audience.

I'm not very experienced in music editing. I need a software where I can set several cuts with the possibility of replaying the selected part and making corrections (often there is only a fraction of a second between the final chord and the applause).

I've looked at some freeware, but those programs delete the part before the cut whereas I want to keep it and cut out only little pieces in between.

It doesn't have to be freeware but it shouldn't be too expensive either.

Audacity does the job, but it re-encodes the file--which results in some loss in sound quality--possibly inaudible.

Mp3 Direct Cut does NOT re-encode and there is no quality loss. But it's a limited tool that does not have anywhere near the functionality of Audacity. It's pretty much limited to simple cuts and fades.

I cut some mp3's and saved as .wav files and burned them in another free utility and I did not notice any loss of quality in the .wav verses mp3 ?

Yeah, you typically wouldn't notice the quality loss unless you did it 3 or 4 times on the same file. Eventually, it will show up, depending on your hearing.

And there's no quality loss in going from mp3 to WAV anyway. WAV is a lossless format, unlike mp3. On the other hand, going from mp3 to mp3 or from WAV to mp3 costs you a little quality.

If you have ever copied cassette tapes several times (a copy of a copy of a copy), you know how that quality loss happens sooner or later---even sooner than it does on mp3 files.

I generally use Audacity myself when I edit mp3s, resaving as another mp3 if I'm simply editing it.

On the other hand, if I'm trying to clean it up (remove noise, pops, ticks, crackles, etc), I'll export the unaltered mp3 in Audacity to WAV format. Then use my cleanup software on the WAV file, resaving as WAV again. Then open that cleaned WAV in Audacity and resave as an mp3. I do that only because my cleanup software won't operate on mp3s---so a conversion to WAV is required.

There's only a one-generation quality loss and the benefits of getting rid of noise far outweigh whatever slight quality loss might be caused by an mp3-WAV-mp3 conversion.

I believe I used kb3 in Linux to burn the .wav files and it worked really well
I may never use windows again for editing and burning music files

SoundSlice and Adobe Audition free trial are your best bet. I like Auditions the most cause it is more like a video editor in the tools that it has.

I recommend Adobe Auditon because you can zoom out very far.
