Google CEO Eric Schmidt trash talks Windows 7

Google just took a jab at Microsoft. Oh, the search giant already did that last week, and it wasn't the first time? Yes, you're right, but now it's Google CEO Eric Schmidt targeting the software giant's biggest product, the latest version of which is particularly successful. Schmidt recently made comments about Windows 7 during a question and answer session at the 25th anniversary celebration of MIT's legendary Media Lab.

In a wide-ranging discussion with National Public Radio journalist John Hockenberry, Schmidt proclaimed that the goal of great technology is to get people to use computers less so they can be more productive. That's fine, but he didn't stop there. "The hours I spend reprogramming my PC in Windows 7 is not a very good use of my time," he told students in the MIT Media Lab auditorium according to CRN. "Why I choose to do that in the first place is a problem with judgment," he added.

We should expect more and more comments like this one from Google as the company readies its answer to Windows, dubbed Chrome OS. Schmidt has already talked about the OS before but now it's clear he's getting ready to start trash talking the competition as well. Chrome OS is slated to arrive before the end of the year. Just last week there was reason to believe that it was at the Release Candidate phase.

The hours he spent reprogramming? Really?! I for one am not impressed by the cloud or any OS just for use with it. My understanding of this OS is that it is not for download to be used on desktops, but for netbooks and tablets, not much of comparison in my opinion

Exactly, would he not have a beta of this great new Chrome OS that he could load in lieu of the inferior MS product? I like Google it's a valuable search engine, I run IE as well as Chrome browsers but I feel the interest in Google tracking my every move is a growing and scary trend that at some point I may not be willing to support. Am I just being naive? or are others concerned with this growing trend and that Big Brother will be jumping in deeper than it already is.....do you hear breathing on the other end of your internet connections? lol

I have dumped all Google programs due to their arrogance toward the public. Their WiFi sniffing fiasco with their Street View show they think they are above the public interest. Its all about the money and privacy be damned.

Mr. Eric is clearly jealous of Microsoft's success with Window's Seven, and is arguably the most nerdy looking CEO in the world.

btw, chrome OS is gonna be free right? i hope so for their sake.

Well it is kind of expected to take some jabs now that you have a product that will be coming out that is going to have to take some of Microsoft's marketshare.

They all seem to do it and kind of is a bummer that Google is no different.


I just always kind of looked up to Google as much as I can for a big company, but now they keep going at it and it shows they really are no different.

It's ironic, as Apple have been taking jabs at Google quite a lot recently as Android slowly takes more smartphone market share off of them.

Quite aside from what Eric Shmidt says or doesn't say, if Chrome is any indication of Google's competenance, MS does indeed have something to worry about.

I was not impressed with Chrome OS, when it was in beta. I believe last year? :huh:
Now I don't know if they changed a lot since then..but when I played with the OS it was boring.

I don't see people rushing to get this Cloud based OS...just yet..
and I agree that Eric Shmidt is jealous of Windows 7

According to this article Google will not gather WiFi information using their Street View cars.

Instead they will use YOUR phone.

"The improvements in smartphone technology in the past few years have allowed Google to obtain the data it needs for this purpose from the handsets themselves."

Won't be buying anything from Google.
