I doubt it is a Chrome issue now. More like an ISP issue. You could try changing your DNS server

Also power cycle your router and modem as mentioned earlier in the thread. No one should have to run the bat file over and over.

Thanks for the advice A. Guy - now i am totally losing my marbles or there was a tip at the bottom of your post with a link to fix my pc? Well i hope so lol, i clicked on it and got analyst complete 572 stability issues found. Then says fix all erros, should i do this or not please? I believe you saw an ad, it wasn't something I posted. Nor would I suggest you do what it says.

As far as changing your DNS, as long as you make note, or a screenshot of your original settings in case you want to change it back, it should go OK for you.

I did the DNS bit but couldn't get on Internet at all after so put it back on auto - still got resolving host issue

just and update - i contacted BT again and they tried several tests online and said that they are not sure what is wrong and i probably need a new hub, which i received and installed today only to find that that hasn't done any good at all i still have the resolving host issue and don't think i am ever going to solve this issue. I will keep checking back to see if anyone comes up with anything new and in the mean time, thanks A Guy for all your help, much appreciated

Sorry, been so busy...No 10 year old PC experts in the family? I still think a DNS change would be the next test. Surprised BT hasn't suggested it. But then again, most ISPs just want to pass the buck. The Resolving Host issue isn't limited to Chrome, but it sure is an issue with it. Something in the coding makes it susceptible. That's why a suggestion to use Google's DNS as well. There are other Chromium based browsers out there, as well as a few Mozilla (Firefox) based ones. You might see if one of them suits you. Ahhh thank you for your patience and i totally agree, i so need a new laptop
I have been trying firefox, actually on it now but the problems are still the same and i am stuck on Google DNS now as forgot to take picture of previous settingsfrom BT lol like an idiot.
I just keep doing that copy paste thingy atm and that helps for a short time

I signed up for the sole reason of saying THANK YOU, "a guy"!!! I have been hunting for a solution for ages. Everyone kept telling me to uncheck internet protocol 6, which I did for every conceivable connection type, with no effect. Ran this script, haven't had an issue since!

I've been having this problem for a couple of months now. I'm on windows 7. The fix posted here, did not work, although it seems to have helped a bit....no proof of that, just gut feeling.

I've notice several times this occurs, the resolving host, last exactly 10 minutes....not every case, but 75% of the time...exactly 10 minutes, from the time I activate the problem by opening the browser. Using Chorme, but other browser, same issue.

Anyone....with ideas?


On edit...thinking adapter problem, got usb adapter...same problem. Thinking Verizon fusion broadband problem...I've had several calls to them. It does appear to be within this laptop.

This is exactly what I have been experiencing. I've tried all sorts of possible solutions which seem to work for a while, then the problem returns.
When I'm getting the "resolving host" message in Chrome, I've opened up a tab & typed CHROME://net-internals, selected the DNS tab & clicked on "view pending lookups". You can then monitor which sites come and go in that list & they're mainly google sites such as clients4.google.com & safebrowsing.google.com. After about 10 minutes, these all get removed from the list, then I reload the sites that have timed out & it's then OK until the next time! You can click on an entry in this list which then displays the code it is running. You see messages such as HOST_RESOLVER_IMR_ATTEMPT_STARTED --> attempt_number n where "n" starts at 1 then increases as each attempt is made. Does any of this make sense?

It may be related but I've looked on Task Manager & noticed amongst the several Chrome.exe processes, one of them is using about 500 Mb of memory & thrashing the CPU. Maybe I should reload Chrome ,however I've also experienced the problem with Internet Explorer when it just hangs until about 10 minutes is up. I've contacted my ISP but they say everything is OK & it's not the router, probably a problem with my PC.

Welcome to Seven Forums Tacitus8. There is a more common issue that the bat file seems to fix for some, then fix temporarily for others. But there are also individual issues that cause the error, and that may be unique to each user and their system. It is not unique to Chrome, but it sure has it more then any other browser.

The Host Resolver is what takes an address (www.sevenforums.com for instance) and "resolves" it to the actual IP address (184.172.52.99). This is also referred to as the DNS resolver. For some reason the lookup stalls, or is unsuccessful, likely why the "thrashing". This could be local machine related, or ISP related, traffic related, etc. Very hard to track down because, as you mentioned, the next visit to that page may work fine. I'm sorry I don't have the expertise to troubleshoot your individual issue. A Guy

McAfee was root cause of Resolving Hosts for me

Like most everyone on this thread, I started getting the Resolving Hosts issue out of nowhere. I tried each and every solution presented in this thread - most worked but only for a short time and then the problem would return. I have multiple devices in my home and narrowed it down to the devices that were running McAfee Total Home Protection. To test my theory, whenever I got the Resolving Hosts message with Chrome, I would turn off my McAfee firewall and *bam* the browser would immediately connect to whatever website I was trying to go to.

Obviously, not having a firewall is a bad thing so I did some further research and finally found this link: https://community.mcafee.com/thread/44528?tstart=0 Post #4 on that thread identifies Net Guard as the problem. I turned off Net Guard for Chrome and have yet to see the Resolving Hosts problem after several days! To further test this, I turned Net Guard on for Internet Explorer and browsed to the same websites that I was going to with Chrome and after a few minutes got the Resolving Hosts message on IE.

Long story short, all of the info in this thread is good and helpful for maintaining a clean, fast browsing experience but a cache or a log or something that Net Guard uses to "protect" your computer has a bug and was the ultimate source of my problem. Hope this helps...

Welcome to Seven Forums cc010769. Nice addition. We often suggest testing in Safe Mode with Networking, and/or Performing a Clean Start to see if there is a conflict. This thread has taken on a life of it's own, so it is good to keep adding options. A Guy

I thought I had cracked it by using Internet Explorer instead of Chrome & like other suggestions, this worked for a couple of days then the problem returned. What I've done today is follow CC010769's suggestion & turn off the McAfee Firewall when the browser hangs. This immediately works & gives me the address I want. I then turn the firewall back on and things run OK for a while, then repeat the Firewall turn off etc. It is clear that the McAfee firewall is causing the problem. It's a bit of a pain toggling the Firewall but at least it's a workround.
So I'm going to contact McAfee to see what they say. As my subscription is up soon, their answer may determine whether I renew or not.

Not being familiar with that particular firewall, isn't there a whitelist/exemptions setting to exclude programs such as Chrome? Setting a rule for Chrome could be the answer. It should not exclude McAfee from protecting you from malicious webpages (assuming it does have that feature). I have a very low opinion of McAfee, but to each his own. A Guy

From the recent post about McAfee...today I confirm the exact 10 minutes of resolving host that I ex[erience is indeed the McAfee firewall.

Soooo...I most likely will be going away from McAfee. What are the best options?

Thank you all the Macaffe thing finally seems to have worked cc010769 - just wondering if it is worth me uninstalling and reinstalling it - the firewall is on but the netprotect isnt which expect is a bit riskay....? Also i get Mcaffe free with BT so dont really want to pay for another VP Thanks lots all

thanks so much for the info on netgaurd. I joined just to post a thank you! I had started with problems about a week ago (even though I am sure I have had this as part of cox total protection for a while) but don't use my computer as much as I do my wifi devices. I had just recently replaced a wifi router/modem and thought that was the issue. After chatting with netgear and cox and making changes I thought all was solved. Nope was still getting resolving host on chrome and hanging on firefox that would come and go. It would (if left alone) resolve after about 10 minutes. I was getting so frustrated before figuring it out at having to restart my computer (after it was asleep) to be able to open a browser. I had tried everything including a system restore as I had just had a windows update about a week ago that I thought had done something. It has now been about 12-hours since I turned off netgaurd and all seems fine. I have woken up the computer and put it to sleep multiple times with no issues. I am wondering why this just started...I assume this has been part of the total protection package through cox for a while, so why now is it blocking internet access? I just bought this computer in December to replace one that died, and I made sure to get windows 7 hahah. I knew I hadn't done anything to it to cause this, but never thought to check into macafee since I have had it through cox for years. Yes yes it's a memory hog, etc.. but its free with my service hahaha. Should have known

Update on McAfee NetGuard

I started experiencing the "Resolving Hosts" issue again after a week or so. Ugghh I can fix by turning McAfee Firewall off/on so now I turned off NetGuard completely. (Prior to this, I had just turned off NetGuard for my browser applications (Chrome, IE, Firefox)). 24 hours into this experiment, so far so good. Read a couple McAfee Forums and found that there is little risk to turning off NetGuard so I don't plan to turn it on again.
