Yeah, I found that to be a bit interesting. I've never really had problems with my ISP provided DNS servers and in the rare event that I did, I just reconfigured to use some root level DNS servers (4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2).

I expect this to give google some type of advantage...like storing the DNS queries somehow to improve their searching, advertising, etc. I think that I will pass.

If you had a slow DNS server to begin with...having a faster one can certainly make a noticeable difference.

I'm happy with my OpenDns, but I guess I will give it a shot as well.

Steve Gibson do a DNS service check Application and from where I am the google speed is actually slower than OpenDNS and a couple of others.

You may want to do a check on your own DNS to see if this is worth the change ....

I've also found GDNS to be a little sluggish.

From where I am openDNS is probably the best all rounder or if you prefer not to have the added security (site blocking) features of OpenDNS - I use level 3's 4.2.2.5 and 4.2.2.3.

The google addresses by the way actually come back as also being Level 3 provided

Always best to include your ISP servers and google's and run the actual test as in the immortal words of the profit - YMMV

My IPS server is actually pretty good. I'm just testing the water with different DNS addresses and Google seems pretty poor so far.
Next stop.....OpenDNS

I expect Google to be really fast at the start..but then likely will slow down over time simply due to traffic. When it comes to the internet and improving performance, people will do just about anything....so I expect lots of people to switch over to this trying to improve their performance.

I'm having a problem understanding Gibson's program, because I downloaded and ran it, and it appears that it simply checks a predefined list of servers...at least I didn't see a way of adding the Google DNS.

According to the results of that list, Cox Cable comes out on top, which is contrary to my experience, but then I only had it set to dynamically assign the server, rather than physically assign them myself, so that might account for the difference.

There are a number of buttons to add the actual default servers for the machine being tested to the set tested - plus an add option which will allow you to add specifics
Click the Add/remove button on the nameservers tab

seems to work OK but if I try and access some websites that the UK doesn't like when I'm in Manchester there's definitely a little delay -- I'm not sure whether this is paranoia on my part or that of the UK authorities wanting to check every ISP address that non nationals are acessing from a UK ISP since it seems that they think any non UK national is trying to shut down the entire country. (Maybe their own Banks could do a better job of this than I could even know about).

I don't blame Google for this -- I'll keep monitoring and see what the difference is --but so far apart from accessing 3 or 4 sites it looks good.

I for one don't have too many issues with Google (at least yet).

If they want to check up on my "Crazy sexual desires" etc etc - well I hope they have a good laugh --and maybe they might even LEARN something interesting -- after all Iceland is not the world's best known country for "Sexual Gratification" --although you might be surprised --wasn't so long ago that there was a 99% strike by women witholding sex until their rights were more enshrined in the law (and we have one of the BEST records on the planet in regard to sexual equality BTW).

At least the epithet "No Sex we're British" was never applied to us over here on the small northern Atlantic - outside the EU (even if now Bankrupt) - but still 100% FREE Island.

Can someone help me interpret this little ditty:

Unless you have some specific reason not to, you should give serious thought to disabling your router's provisioning of DNS services (which it is providing for all computers on your local network). After this is done, a fresh reboot of your computers will likely reveal the multiple DNS nameservers provided by your ISP. This is a superior configuration, without an under-powered router acting as a incompetent middleman and impeding all DNS access.

My router gives me the choice of defining DNS servers or using those my ISP defines. Gibson is saying I should disable all router DNS services?

I hate when certain DNS providers redirect you in certain ways when making typos.

Now that irritates me and I do things to prevent that lol.

As far as Gibson goes, what he says is always true and I have learned so much from him. He is a bit of a sensationalist though. heh
