Google Extending Chrome support for XP users until April 2015

On April 8, 2014, after more than a decade of powering many of the world’s computers, Windows XP will officially retire. Like all technologies that come to their end-of-life, the XP operating system and most of its desktop applications will no longer receive updates and security patches. Since unpatched browser bugs are often used by malware to infect computers, we’re extending support for Chrome on Windows XP, and will continue to provide regular updates and security patches until at least April 2015.

I'd say the purpose of this is to make the less developed demographics become more aware of Google Chrome. If I look at browser stats of some of the 2nd or 3rd world countries, Google chrome mostly dominates the browser usage share. Nonetheless, this is good news for people who will be forever stuck with XP.

As previously reported here and on other websites, XP will continue to get support from Microsoft beyond April 8, 2014 . . . for a select group of users and for a price.

Why wouldn't Google extend Chrome support for a product that will still be supported (albeit, in a limited fashion) by Microsoft? If these select users happen to be using Chrome prior to April 8, I doubt they're going to stop using Chrome after April 8.

Funny anyways those xp dinosaur machines won't last much longer and will break down eventually forcing ppl to buy another pc and thus upgrading. I got two pcs that came with xp and they seem like they want to give out already since they are slowing down and starting to have issues regardless of fresh installs. Had 3 but that one died already and two are left wonder how long those will last . One is over a decade old and the other one is about 7 years old.

I'm not a Google fan, but this is a cunning move by Google.

This will generate a good impression of their corporation, at a time when MS is deliberately antagonising a large number of its users.

Maybe one or more of the PC suppliers will release "XP Compatible" hardware and drivers.

It they did that, it would really "put the boot" into MS.
There are currently 100M - 500M potential replacements orders out there "in the wild" (depending on whose figures you believe).

At $500- $1000 per replacement ... you do the maths.

In other good news, Avira will be supporting XP until April 8, 2015... one full year after M$'s official end-of-life.

The bad news is that 7 will only be supported until January 13, 2016.

Odd... last I knew, 7's end-of-life isn't until 2020. Why support XP after all support is finished, yet not support 7 the same way?

I think once 7 gets closer to its EOL we'll be seeing a lot of companies extending their support. They might be sitting back waiting to see what MS plans on doing.

Assuming XP users are not hardcore users, I don't see hardware failing. Over the past 18 years of PC usage (OEM and DIY) including OC, I only saw a powersupply failure. thsi could be replaced regardless of OS. the next highest failure rate are HDD (or fans), which also can be repalced regardless of OS.

Only MB failure would cause the need to get a newer OS. but how often does that happen/ (happened to my work PC, but that was a Dell, so these are throwaway devices anyway)

True but most casual users don't just replace parts and they just buy another pc. That's the point I was trying to make but what you said is also true.
