Google Instant

I'm confused about all the hype behind Instant. All it does it start loading the pages without hitting enter.

I find it a waste. I think it is a distraction of pages loading while you are typing your search.

I'm going to stick to the classic "enter" way.;)

I hate it. I will type and search the way I want to. There are thousands of post on Google forum complaining that they can't turn if off. Google spoke person posted that instant can't be turned off. I have tried there option of turning it off when I was signed in and signed off. I can't turn it off. Note. When I went there I noticed; after the post you have a yes or no, was this post helpful is turned off. I couldn't make them work.

I think it's ok, but from my testing it only works with "www.google.com" not .co.uk

I can use the classic search using google.co.uk not sure about other languages.

If not then https://www.google.com or https://encrypted.google.com - neither of those 2 seem to be using instant, but you'll lose the google images and other stuff on the top bar

So Google instant works with https for you?

I don't see why it's not working on https on mine as it's a .com site not country specific, unless it goes by your ip? I'd like to be able to use instant on https as that's what I use.

If I type google.com it switches to .co.uk, and I can't use instant. The only way I can ever get instant to work is to use google.com/ncr which forces to google.com.
Tried both Firefox and Chrome - strange that I'm getting different results to you.
Maybe it's where it's a new feature and it's not fully stable yet.

I don't see why it's something to hate, it's what I always wanted as I always use short search terms to get the results I want faster. I can almost guarantee everyone who hates it will end up loving it after a while when you get used to it. The only thing I'm not liking is the very slight delay when the search results pop up, it feels a bit laggy but they will probably up the speed soon no doubt

I don't dislike it but I don't think it particularly useful. Rather amused that it doesn't appear at all in Google Chrome Dev build. I looked it up and was advised to clear my cache. Did that, still no Instant:)

Doesn't work for me at all in Firefox, and going to keep it that way. Probably has something to do with the OptimizeGoogle extension I have, and that I have most of everything Google blocked with it.

I'm too old fashioned for this stuff -- also the algorithm can get hosed up -- for example if I want info on Quantum computing but type Quantum Computers I'll be inundated by references to retail outlets or people selling stuff called Quantum comuters but what I actually WANT is information obut the whole idea of Quantum computing technology.

Sometimes search engines can be "too helpful" by far flooding you with an overload of information when less results which require MORE screening might be a better and more effective way of gleaning the information you want.

Probably me showing my age here but I already HATE stuff which attempts to complete your typing as you enter.

Probably this is designed for people so used to texting on mobile phones where limiting the number of keystrokes is of obvious value.

Cheers
jimbo

Agreed Jimbo. I have this issue sometimes when looking up authors or info on books, I am given 20 diff places that sell the book with one snippet of info....

But....

I do like this new feature. It is a little confusing at first, but has predicted most of my search results correctly. This saved me a few keystrokes and maybe 2 seconds of searching. I don't know how beneficial that is, but its an interesting design....
