Google’s reCAPTCHA (Mostly) Does Away With Those Annoying CAPTCHAs

The end of the CAPTCHA is nigh — and very few tears will be shed for them. As Google today announced, those ubiquitous forms that make you prove you are human by typing in barely legible words and house numbers will soon be replaced with a single click — at least on sites that use Google’s reCAPTCHA service.

The company is now rolling out a new API that replaces the distorted text with a new experience where users simply check a box that says “I’m not a robot.”

That is going to be harder at least for me. I like the address numbers. Neither one works to well. I had issue with a lot of Captcha's

We've switched all our sites to this over the last few days (registration page and guest contact us), sometimes you still have to type a Captcha code but the system is much better.

Great job because most CAPTCHA aren't clear and some people have trouble finding the letters. Google understands us!

Hi there

Many times I've been unable to complete logon / registration for some services over these wretched Captcha schemes -- I though it was just me - but obviously the problem is far more widespread.Good riddance to these schemes. They won't be missed.

In any case some hardware by scanning the code / image can READ these so Captcha's aren't fool proof against machine use.

Phrases aren't the answer either -- anything based on logic or publically accessible information will eventually be able to be done quicker and more accurately by a machine than using Humans --for example the often used Bank security question "What's your mothers maiden name" can be found out by accessing openly available public records.

I don't know what the best solution is -- biometrics have their drawbacks too.

Perhaps a bit of "LOW TECH" might work -- the use of a ONE TIME PAD - however you'd need a new one for each logon.

jimbo45 that ancient. My nick is actual part of my full name. Some people prefer privacy, others do not. There is actually one good one in the U.S. but it is too good and frowned on by ACLU. It what is used by My Social Security uses. What it does it checks you credit report to verify your identity and ask you some very difficult questions. If you have a security freeze and don't want to temporarily lift it, fraud alert or can't answer the questions correctly, you have to sign up in person at your local Social security office in the U.S. This wouldn't work for other countries.

However, a lot places use google, twitter, yahoo, facebook but a lot of those can have fake accounts, twitter you can just use your first name.

Yea it's always a wonder because it shows two words usually I always have to guess which one to type in
