Governing files & Can UAC Block/Warn Before File Moving/Renaming?

You know how UAC (user account Control) asks for permission when executing certain programs or when renaming or modding certain files in certain directories?

Well i wish i could have it govern over many other folders and files because i tend to accidentally move my hand when double-clicking and may move or rename things by mistake. even for simple files like music and movies and pictures

Also, is there a way to put a password on giving such permissions. For me a simple warning of the UAC popping up would be enough because it gives me a chance to change my mind if i made a mistake. However it would be good to raise the security level even higher for totally blocking family or friends from moving stuff around, yet allowing them to use those files. I just dont want, say, my children to screw up their "Cartoons" folder that has all their cartoon avi's in it. or other things, yet i still want them to watch them.

I remember finding options to make some of the changes you speak of. You can type UAC in the start-menu search bar to find the regular UAC settings to up it to always notify. The easiest way to make those changes is to use gpedit.exe, but its not available in Home Premium. I'll keep looking around for you. Would you mind telling me exactly what version of 7 you have?

You can use gpedit.exe (type that into the start menu searchbar). It would be helpful to every that tries to help you if you would fill out you system specs, and write what version of 7 you have. And you still didn't tell me if it was 32 or 64 bit.

oh sorry. it's 32bit. i did a search on that exe and i dont see it. weird. i do see a msi or something like that. is that what you mean?

Hi Brash,

Although you can, and will need to, use GPedit to change the basics of how UAC operates once it's triggered. in order to change when the UAC is triggered you will need to reset file and folder permissions for your user folders.

As this is quite complicated and I will need to check the specifics of the default permissions of user folders I will need a little time to put together some reasonable information.

OK Changes required to trigger UAC for moving files in non system folders

The UAC will trigger when a user does not have sufficient rights in a folder to perform the action requested (Move /Modify Etc.)

If you check the permissions on the folder you will find that for user folders there is an entry for your actual user. and it may also show that the owner of the folder is also the actual user.

As the UAC treats the normal Administrator level account as two accounts removing this account name from full control and from ownership, (set owner to the administrators group), will cause the UAC to be triggered.

For standard accounts you will need to ensure that the everyone group and, If present, the actual user only have at most navigate and execute rights
