Hi, i am wanting to extend my C partition (sda3) as i am running out of space, GParted however will not allow me to use the allocated space that you can see from the screenshot.
sda5 is able to extend from the allocated space but not the C partition (sda3), i would assume this is because i have freed the unallocated space from this partition.

Maybe i am missing the obvious but i cannot figure it out after hours of searching.
I am only wanting to do this from the live cd and not from my linux installation, i only ran GParted from my linux install to get the screenshot

Try shrinking the extended (container) partition (sda4) and putting the resulting free space between sda3 and sda4. Then extend sda3 (C) into the free space that follows it, but is no longer "inside" sda4.

Exactly what flemur said - your unused space is still inside the extended partition.
