Decided to update my GPU driver ATI mobility radeon 550v ( version 8.692 ) and the ATI CCC 10.1 to the latest 11.2 and the GPU driver. GPU driver can be installed and uninstalled with no prob... the prob was with the ATI CCC 10.1 . Did not uninstall this and went str8 to the new installation update. GPU driver updated succcessfully but the ATI CCC was without 3D options and others etc. Left with Display Center and Power Supply option. Nth else was there... did the uninstalling from the ATI CCC installer but was not successful. "No Files were detected for the removal"

Did the Control Panel thing and was not successful. Click on Uninstall/Change mouse showed loading icon after that nth happens, Run CCleaner in safe mode and still the same issue. Unable to remove it with CCleaner nor CTRL Panel nor CCC installer. Did try to manually delete files and folders for ATI Technologies on C:Programs Filex86/ATI Technologies. Prompted " ...program being used by another person or program..."

begin another test, install the same 10.1 CCC downloaded from ATI official site so that i can uninstall it again, nothing appears to be installed in that folder. it was like blank installation. No error message... installation log all were successful. Tried to uninstall after that .. no can do... had been trying for 2 days.. really appreciate some help here.

If your laptop uses switchable graphics which based on the specs leads me to believe it does,

Intel i5 460M with the integrated graphics built into the CPU
AMD HD 550V

and it switches between the two depending on the graphics workload (the Intel for low power use, and the AMD for high graphics power usage programs), then there is a good reason you are having a problem getting the latest Catalyst suite to install. Straight from the release notes for it,

AMD Catalyst

The following notebooks are not compatible with this release:

  • Any notebook launched after this driver release
  • Switchable Graphics enabled notebooks using Intel® chipsets.
  • Toshiba® notebooks (please contact the notebook OEM for driver support for these notebooks)
  • Sony® VAIO® notebooks (please contact the notebook OEM for driver support for these notebooks)
  • Panasonic® notebooks (please contact the notebook OEM for driver support for these notebooks)

which means you are stuck with whatever Dell has available. It also means that you have to have both the Intel and AMD driver installed for it to work properly.

oww.. that hurts.. the driver for the AMD 550v which is from dell was the 8.692. still using it right now. Searched dell's for the Catalyst Centre to my GPU and found nothing.

550v is based on HD 4650 platform and when i did the GPU driver update - system detects automatically as 4650. I did the reinstallation procedures and get back to the dell version and got 550v stated again.. its ironic but i guess that 550v was only for non AMD - Notebook manufacturers.

will try to contact dell's technician or .... a 3 and a half hours flight back to my home country. Now i'm staying in a country which do not have dell support/service centre... which is kinda bad...

PS: the CCC is still there i can right click on the desktop and run it, but it seems just to be an interface rather than a program, maybe called it an empty shell.. weird

OK just looked a little more at t your laptop and it looks like it doesn't support switchable graphics, despite being able too and only uses the AMD. Now with that said there is still limited support for the mobility GPU's in the reference Catalyst suite. It would be worth the effort to try the one from here,

AMD Mobile Catalyst Download - ComputerBase

as it only supports mobility GPU's.

Yes, this was precisely what i've got from the ATI site, where it will appear as Catalyst Control Centre 2 (setup exe ) instead of the normal CCC. At the moment not able to try it out again, have not got the Catalyst 10.1 in the laptop solved.

One issue to note, it was weird that the catalyst was able to load. Settings can be tweaked but the 3D display ( preview of current and new ) was with the wording "LOADING" ... this was when i reinstalled back the 10.1 ( blank installation ) - the 3D settings pop out again with the rest of it . so i assumed that it was just a mere settings interface without connection to the GPU.

Main thing now - needs to get the old CCC removed a.s.a.p with all the remnants!! i'm not computer expert and i really appreciate all the assistance and effort from you guys !!

got from somewhere in a forum that the 550v which was recognized as 4650 in the new GPU driver info, it works finely with a performance upgraded as well...

Re : ATI Catalyst 10.12 For Toshiba/Sony/Acer Notebooks - Get it here!
Many thanks LQDForce, i could upgrade my 7 months old Dell drivers, i won about 10 FPS in 3D applications.

However my ATI Mobility HD 550v is detected as a HD 4650 in the device manager, i guess it's normal : ATI Mobility Radeon HD 550v - Notebookcheck.net Tech

Now I wonder if there is a simple way to stay updated, I do not want to be stuck at the next release of drivers, have you done something special ? What is the source where you can find these drivers ?

I look forward to your reply and sorry if my English is not "perfect".

Latest Update : Have managed to removed all ATI components, re-installed successfully the ATI CCC 11.2 - nothing showed up. Control Panel not showing the software/program as if just a ghost was installed..." you can see them but actually there is nothing there". Now i'm assuming that SP1 caused the corruption.

Now- will try to reformat the whole thing > update everything again starting with SP1 , GPU Driver from ATI and only then the ATI CCC. Soonest update will have to be at least on Monday.

Hope to be able to trouble shoot this.

see here on how to completely scrub out old drivers..
TweakGuides.com - ATI Catalyst Tweak Guide

don't forget to run a registry cleaner to remove all old "stubs" etc..

FYI, that tweak guide over at tweakguides.com hasn't been updated since June 2009 as noted on the first page here - TweakGuides.com - ATI Catalyst Tweak Guide

Above procedure was based on the links that you've provided. Thanks alot for letting me and others know about this. Another funny thing was, no error message prompted starting from my first installation until now. Only problem was "program being used by another person or program..." during manualy deleting.

Extra Info : Windows 7 Unstable : before the process of updating GPU driver and the CCC , i notice that win explorer have quit a distracting load timing . When it has not finished loading , double click on the explorer again and i'd get "program not responding" this happens after Win 7 updates ( ... been on the auto updates quite sometime... not sure which update did this... )

another error i found S.M.A.R.T short self test timed out ... unable to complete on some occasion and not running ... did a troubleshoot and found out the program that might have caused that error. the report showed ".....AMD " .

Finally, a reformat did the trick - upgraded to win 7 ultimate, change Mcafee security center ( left 10 months ) to AVG and some tweaks , justify to say, the CCC was working normally again.
