GPU performance

Is there a soft or something that could show me what's the difference of performance for a system with a GeForce 8600GT Bliss , 256 MB and with a 8800 GT , 512MB?

You would get at least double the performance with a 8800GT compared to a 8600GT.

So the windows (7) would perform a lot better?
I mean is there a limitation in the OS performance due to the graphic card characteristics?

Or just that u need to have a minimum memory on the graphic card, and with it's characteristics the OS performance grows, but not as noticeable as the 3DM points out ?

8800gt has about 90% performance increase over 8600gt. You will only notice the difference though if play games. On the 8800gt you will be able to crank most games up to maximum eye candy effects and still have a good frame rate. With the 8600gt you will be hovering around low to medium settings and still get a poorer frame rate.

Of course though like I said you will not notice the difference when you are just browsing the web or doing something in office, word etc etc.

You would also notice the difference if you photo or video edit as well.

All in all it is by far a more superior card.

Photo, video editing, an oracle server let's say, or something that uses a rather big database, using a soft for a big java or php project, those things i was interested in.

Photo and video editing is thumbs up, you would notice the difference.

You would see a bigger improvement with a faster multi-core processor and more memory if you are running those applications. Video/photo editing is still largely affected by the CPU and you won't see much benefit in going with a 8800GT over a 8600GT.

There are performance charts on review sites like Anandtech.com, but these mostly focus on game performance since games are what push video cards the hardest. However, I believe a strong card makes a significant, if less obvious difference in OS generally. I first used a 6600 GT 128meg card in Vista, then moved to a 9600 GT 512meg card and saw a big jump in the Windows Experience Index scores. The GUI was noticeably more responsive with the 9600 GT. Demands on the video card will only increase over time and a stronger card is going to provide a better experience and last longer. I say get the stronger card unless cost is the overiding concern.
