Hey guys I cant get my head round this.

I orignally had a Nvidia 7300 LE, upon installing 7 it would say out of range, even with the latest drivers it still would not work unless I disabled the card all together.

So I purchased a Gigabyte GTS 250 which arrived today and have installed.

This has resolved my Aero functions, which I could not use due to onboard graphics.

But now in my Nvidia control panel I cannot enable my second monitor, I check the box and apply but the screen remains blank and the box gors back to not having a tick inside it.

I am missing something obvious.......???

Hello,

Try using the built-in display manager instead. Right-click on the desktop and click Screen Resolution.

Sounds like a driver issue. Try downloading the latest drivers from the manufacturer and installing them.

Right I've update my driver via Windows update.

Now the problem is my resolution, i can extend my 2nd monitor but only if it's on 800x600 if I try to put it on 1024x768 (exactly the same as my 1st monitor) it says out of range, but if the 2nd is clone display on 1024x768 it works...... WTF????

The second monitor connected to the new video card or still connected to the onboard video?

Instead of using the windows setting rightclickdesktop/screenresolution, I had to go into my Nvidia control panel and the refresh rate was set at 85Hz!!!

So just knocked it back down to 60Hz... Problem resolved

Thanks anyway guys :)

Thanks for posting the solution. Can you actually stay sane at 60Hz? I can't use a monitor at any less than 75- and even that is pushing it. I prefer 85, but my monitor does not support it at the resolution I prefer.

Jonathan big difference is you are still using CRT monitors which need a high(er) refresh rate, and djjamieg's are LCD.

How's this,

Response Time vs. Refresh Rate

Ok, so if an LCD monitor doesn't refresh itself many times a second, why does an LCD monitor still require a particular refresh rate setting in Windows? We previously discussed the fact that refresh rates are something only a CRT monitor needs because of the way it physically operates. Well it appears that LCD monitors need to emulate a refresh rate in Windows primarily for compatibility purposes with games and hardware. Games, Windows and your graphics card are all still designed around composing individual frames in the frame buffer, and sending these whole frames to your monitor one by one, with the timing for buffer flipping typically based on Vertical Blank Intervals - all things which were originally required for CRT monitors. Therefore LCD panels have to try to operate on the same basis, despite the fact that they don't have the same physical limitations of a CRT.
