Graphic turns off on boot up

Thank you greg. I was getting ready to do the install and I tried to just disable the graphics card one more time after running malwarebites and Eset. Now it boots with graphics but when I enter the driver it crashes and says that hardware does not exist. If the card is not working how am I seeing the screen? I used driver cleaner like essenbe suggested and installed catalyst control center but when I click on it is says AMD driver not installed or not functioning properly. The display I am seeing now is at 1280 x 1024.
I tried auto detect from AMD and it enters the drivers but the card still not working.

Since you said you have onboard display adapter chip I would physically remove the video card after making sure onboard chip is enabled in BIOS. Then try the install. Once it's installed, try reinstalling the video card by letting Windows Update provide the driver which Win7 wants: Automatically get recommended drivers and updates for your hardware

With just on-board display chip...Graphics card uninstalled... will start in safe mode but no boot into windows. Well..it does boot just turns off monitor. Tried a new Graphics card.....no dice...Windows lists it..Amd cannot find hardware. Very odd. Only way anything works is if graphics is disabled.

Are you able to try the test install to shrunken partition I've now suggested three times without response?

Sorry...I am trying that now Greg. I was hoping not to have to trash some work programs installed on this OS. I'll get back to you when I discover if that works.

How would it trash work programs to shrink C slightly to run a booted test install to the space you shrunk? Clean Install Windows 7

Back up a Win7 backup image and your files first externally: Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup.

However such a test install will not touch the other partition as long as you're careful to choose the correct one, by size and position.

So I guess I need to create a simple volume for the installer to see. Right now after the shrink I no still cannot see the new space.

OK got it. Made new windows 7. installed drivers for motherboard, put in card after restart and it installed (standard vga adapter). When I asked it to search for driver it found radeon 6670. On restart it bombed...screen went black. 2 more restarts and the drivers are working fine. The old windows says it cannot start the hardware because of corrupt files. Great idea Greg....where do I go from here?....complete reinstall?

It's up to you. Since you don't have much invested in the new install, or if you failed to boot the installer so that it's not C, you can back up your files on the old partition externally then reinstall deleting all partitions during install as shown in this tutorial to get a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which is the same for retail.

Or to keep what you have post back a screenshot of your maximized Disk management drive map with listings and we'll advise you how to use free Partition Wizard bootable CD to move the System boot files to the new partition, delete the old one and resize the new one into its space - if that's what you want.

Thank you Greg...I'm letting her decide. The original windows finally took the AMD drivers...had to fix windows installer and turn on module installer. Looks like it is going to work but I still do not trust it.

Possible solution

I'm a bit late to the party but I just wanted to add my experiences. I had the same problem with a client. After a windows update which installed an NVidia driver the screen turned off as soon windows was started up and showing the logon screen.

I used remote desktop to access the machine. This of course requires a second computer in the network. It's probably easy to find or borrow a laptop and hook it up into the network. I've had this already set up as the pc was in a managed domain network.

You could turn on remote desktop in safe mode. Click on start, right-click computer, then properties. In the side menu choose remote settings. In the window that opens choose in the lower part 'Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop (less secure)'. Remember to turn this off when you're done fixing the problem, this might be a security risk if your computer operates on public networks etc.

To start a remote desktop session:
- Click start, type the command: mstsc and hit enter.
- Fill in the computer name or ip address (use the command ipconfig on the target machine or go to the properties page of the computer to find the computer name)
- Click on connect. After logging on remotely, I've uninstalled all NVidia drivers choosing not to restart. Then I went to windows updates and clicked on optional updates. Richt click all NVidia updates and choose 'hide'. Restart, the old drivers should be loaded and all is fine.

You can also use System Restore from System Recovery Options to roll back to before a bad driver is installed, then quickly change Windows Updates to manually download and let you choose to install, hide it in Windows Updates when it is offered again. But I would want to try the driver again to make sure that's what is causing the unusual anomaly. Checking the logs may also offer clues: Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7

guilty adapter

in one of my computers it hapens after windows 7 installation. I found that guilty was KVM switch (adapter for one mouse, keyboard and monitor plug in to two computers to use them separately). :sarc:
