Graphics card heating question

So, i just checked the GPU-Z and it says my graphics card temp is 74C
So, my question: is that a lot?
If not, how much is a lot?
What is normal?
And what is low?

Under load pending on the card, say XFX 9800gt I asked them and they said it was within tolerances. Still felt to high for my liking. And claimed 100c-110c would be critical. Naturally the cooler the better. If that is not under load I would be concerned. Possibly check to make sure the fan was running properly and probably reseat the fan with some Artic silver 5 or ceramic. Fabe

It says my fan speed is 50 %

If under full load i would say that somewhat normal.

Still, a bit on the hot side. For most modern GPUs, 70ish C under a full load is considered normal.
I would Prefer mid-low 60s MAX myself ...

beyond what thefabe has suggested, perhaps try and get some better airflow to the card.

As far as whats "normal" .... Its hard to say exactly. has it always run that hot? If so, then its likely that is normal for your card.
I would still try some of the measures suggested to cool it off regardless

I would say its on the high side (if idling) under full load seems normal from what i read from other people's comments off Google, this card seems to run hot quite frequently.
See if you can find a way to cool it off a little (extra fans).
Just make sure it doesnt go over 80 degrees....not good.

Thanks for the replies ppl. Now that i remembered, it doesnt have a fan of its own. So why does gpu-z tell me the fan speed? I just logged in and its 54 C. So theres nothing to worry about right? I was playing the last time, and then closed the game, and after 15 min ran gpu-z. Then it was 74 C. But 15 min seems enough time to cool down dont you think?

Sounds as if its just normal for that card. Id get a fan blowing toward it,or better airflow in the area, if you can though. Cooler the better.

Alright. Thanks ppl! One more question: On what tempreture will the computer shut itself down? Can i adjust that? What should i make it?

In a lot of bios you can set shut down temps. But a lot of overclockers shut off thermal throttling and all the other protective settings. As far as what temp i would suggest checking with the manufacturer they usualy have max temps listed somewhere in the rellease notes on the cpu or gpu. Heat and voltage are your worst enemies. You also have to realize that overclocking lessens the life span of the hardware. Not to mention bye bye warrnties.

Mother board manufacturer cause it should be in the bios, graphic card man. Cpu man. Ram manufacturers. All these are used when going for the gold medal of overclock. You can overclock your CPU and 'Video card moderatly fairlly easy pending on your bios choices for your CPU settings and for graphics their are a lot of applications to allow you to do some overclocking. But real overclockers won't ,don't reccommend using applications it's all about getting intimate with your bios settings. And not all boards are designed with all the needed features to reach some of the overclocks you see. The whole Idea behind overclocking came from being able to buy mid range hardware and push it to or over the more expensive harware. It becomes an addiction if you let it. World records using liquid nitrogen ect. You can use EVGA precision to overclock your card and control your fan. Alright, i installed, and its "creating registrys"
Anyway, i just noticed, OMG ive only been doing webbrowsing, and in 30 min the temp is 74 C again! What is up with that? So its the same amount, even if i play or dont play. Thats weird right?
Also, where can i edit fan speed @Computersplus?

@coolness: Are you trying to overclock the system in your specs? Cause if you are I wouldn't even bother cause your not going to get enough of a overclock to see much of a difference, Not to mention Laptops run warm to begin with. You need to blast some canned air through the fans (system off) and I used 2 paint sturers glued together cut to length and placed them under the back of my lappy so the fans can breath. Or get a laptop cooling station. If your running 74c just browsing then you need to get better air flow. IMO. Fabe

laptops run hot your not going to get away with overclocking on that even the fan control may or may not work I only suggested those due to the fan speed control
