Solved Graphics card not being used after system restore

Hi,

HP had updates to do for some hardware on my notebook, one of the updates was for the finger reader. After the required reboot windows wouldnt recognize my password and gave an error message of a bad stub.

I then performed a system restore to an earlier date, when it completed i got the "black screen of death" but if i pressed ctrl-alt-dlt i could shit down the pc, i did that and restarted and it booted to windows and gave me the message that the restore had completed successfully.

I use the notebook to play starcraft 2 and since the system restore my fps dropped drastically ingame to the point where i actually cant play. I tried lowering all the graphics settings and the fps improved drastically. So i assume there is a problem with my graphics card.

The switchable graphics says that it is set to high performance. I have googled for the last 4 days to try find a solution to this problem but i am unable to find anyone with the same problem? i have tried re-installing the graphics drivers and BIOS drivers it is still not working. I tried disabling the onboard graphics card and running the game but it comes up with an error and wont start the game.

Any suggestions?

Try looking in control panel for all drivers related to your graphics card and uninstall them. check all your drivers (standard: enable windows to check drivers for you / advanced: look up the manufacturer's website yourself for drivers) and uninstall old and install new. If you do not need the software HP suggests, I suggest removing it completely. Others may disagree, but HP software seems to act more like a virus sometimes, or at least a leach. I keep that lifesucking software off of any computer I own if I can help it. See if the new graphics driver helps you any (also, going into its control panels and setting the settings up to high may solve your problem, if you haven't yet) let me know anything further

Hi dusty,

Thanks for the advice, i searched for the latest drivers for my graphics card and found a free driver scan to show outdated drivers, i did the scan and it found 3 of the chipset drivers were "ancient". After updating them via the device manager i tried updating my graphics card aswel from the device manager and it dowloaded quite a large update and started installing. The screen flashed a few times then stayed off. After about 5 minutes i forced a shut down and restarted. I tried the update again and it said that the drivers are up to date. So i tried playing a game in starcraft and my fps has gone from 8fps to 40fps....much better

That is quite strange, so you are sure you had uninstalled old drivers first? often times it isn't too big a problem to install new drivers over old, but safest is to uninstall and then install the new ones. So long as you got it working, I guess everything is in order. glad to hear of your success. Hopethe game looks as you had expected it to.
