graphics card recomendations?

Had I known that my one flippant pro-AMD comment, said mostly in jest, would cause a slew of nVidia fanboys to come crawling out of the woodwork; I'd have kept my keyboard closed.

Sry just kinda skimmed through and I know this post is about which GPU but off topic for a second you say your planning to get an i5 2500 I would recommend the i5 2500k there only $15-$20 more and u have the option to over clock it. Even if you have no plan to oc I would still recommend the "k" model in case you decide to try oc'ing later and on the new bios it is ridiculously easy to oc most new mobo's even have a 1 click oc if you really want an easy oc

Thanks for that link, but here's one I regularly use. It's a benchmark list of all graphics cards.

Mobile Graphics Cards - Benchmark List - Notebookcheck.net Tech

Yes the name is notebookcheck, but you can select to display desktop cards as well. The thing I like about that site is each graphics card comes with links to reviews as well as models of what computers carry it, reviews of those, etc.

4 of the 5 GPUs I have owned over the years have been EVGA. 1 was xFx. I can say that I have absolutely no need to look elswhere for another GPU brand. Quality is superior, customer service is superior and they stand apart on innovation. My 3gig 580 is a dream. :D

The last 10-12 years have taught me something.
They both put out good and bad drivers, they even both make good and bad cards.
Fanboyism is a strange thing.

However, as a general rule.
I have been more impressed with nvidia image quality in 3d apps and ati the same with video as I've jumped back and forth between them over the years. I actually currently have this gtx580 and a 5850 in the other box.
The gods honest truth is in 90% of everything I throw at them they perform very much the same. I don't mean in actual frames or anything but just in the smoothness of the image and how my eye takes to it.
The only real difference pops up in games that
a - support physx
and
b - Use tesselation/hbao
In which case it's the gtx580 hands down. ...but it's also a much more expensive card. All things balanced they're still both good cards.
..and I've not had driver problems with either of them.
The last nvidia driver problem I had was with my 7800's when mirror's edge was released and it couldn't pre-render frames... that was fixed by just changing one setting properly though.

EVGA is very good and solid company, my friend have GTX 460 from evga and he can download some OC bios profiles for his card ( so you only need to flash new bios and unlock more power ) and EVGA applications for overclocking and monitoring are just awesome ( increasing voltage, frequencies, profiles etc. ) and they are 100% working, but on the other hand MSI is not bad at all if we speak about card with non-reference PCBs for example Lightning editions or some OC editions are very good and contains high quality coils, capacitors, voltage cascade and cooling ! With Evga or MSI you won´t regret

The 5850 I mentioned in the long rambling post above has been a good card as said, and it was also xfx ... so was the 8800gtx nvidia I had before that, also a good card. Unfortunately xfx could not resolve their differences with nvidia and haven't been making nvidia cards since the 9800 I think.

Anyhow, that 8800gtx suffered extremely heavy use for a long time and is retired to a drawer as a back up card now.. still working great. The one time I had to deal with their customer support it was honestly a tad frustrating but all in all far better than I have gotten from most.

...and of course one should try to take into consideration they are usually already in a poor mood by the time they contact support ...you know all that messy human stuff.
