An suggestions for a video card with 4-6 GB of RAM plus an additional 6 GB of PC RAM that I can also use for a next generation PC in a couple of years? I was looking at something like a GEFORCE 1060 ti or better. I prefer to stay away from AMD because they tend to have video tearing issues especially when streaming video online.

I noticed there are some "knock-offs" being sold online for more than half off retail that don't have any branding eg. NVIDIA, Asus, AMD, etc. I'm currently using an old ATI Radeon 5700 1 GB video card.

Also, if someone could share their insights whether or not now is a good time to buy considering there's more interest in bitcoin mining.

Yeah, I was gonna say. Bitcoin made its third highest high and so being GPUs are going to sell for a pretty penny. I need to look and see what they're going for now.

The GPU you want will dictate what you'll sue it for. Are you a hard core gamer, a moderate gamer, old school gamer, play small Facebook games and other crap like that, run video intensive programs, etc.

RAM depends on the motherboard's QVL (Quality Vendor List) and the type of RAM supported for that motherboard. What ever motherboard you decide on will dictate the type of RAM you buy and whether the motherboard manufacture has it listed as a QVL in the list of tested RAM. While you could just use any old RAM that works with the motherboard and not on the QVL list, it isn't recommend as you are sure to have issues right away or further down the line. Many people will probably just buy G.Skill and say the hell with it, then write a review stating the RAM was garbage. No, you more than likely bought the wrong RAM.

You say for a next generation PC. That to me sounds like a whole new PC. Are you talking about the Asus listed in the title?

What is your budget?

Thanks for replying

This board doesn't seem to have much activity for us relics to peruse, lol.

I'm looking at a few years at least down the road for a new system. Apparently AMD Ryzen CPUs are beating Intel, but in a few years maybe Intel will make a comeback.

I wish I invested in Bitcoin just 6 months ago. Except I'm in Canada and our dollar has been trading for several years now at least 30-35% below the American greenback.BC is always traded in US. To make the investment worthwhile, BC would need to rise well above 35^ which now it obviously has. When trading in foreign currency, you get screwed when you buy in US currency, and you receive a much worse exchange rate when you cash it in. It's the natural law of foreign exchange.

Right now, I'm just looking to see what GPU will fit in my motherboard and not cause me any issues. One of the mods here, Brink had the same motherboard as me years ago. Mine still has the puny 1 GB or RAM on it. I upgraded my monitor to 32 inches and my GPU card has the old school ports + 1 HDMI. No DP.

I won't do any gaming at all, just streaming and minor video editing. I think I want to stay away from AMD/ATI since they seem to have video tearing issues if not with offline playback but streaming in Chrome. I have tweaked my settings and switched to VLC over the years, but one can only do so much. NVIDIA doesn't seem to be plagued with video tearing issues.

I'm looking at the GEFORCE 1060ti line of GPUs but their prices be quite high. Perhaps they have skyrocketed due to BC mining? I understand in 2021 the supply should [hopefully] stabilize by becoming more plentiful and maybe that will push the prices down. Even used they are expensive. I seen some on Ebay which appear to be knock-offs and in local CraigsList type sites that have no branding at all. There's lots of risk if not buying from a reputable dealer.

As far as price goes, it seems my budget isn't realistic at the moment. I'm looking at under $200 for 6GB GPU. But maybe I don't need that much and it's overkill? I want to stream in 4K and higher. However, I'm not sure if my first gen i7 2.8 Ghz can do it. If it can't, I'd like to at least be able to use the new GPU in a few years as long as it's not [too] long on the tooth.

The prices are pretty outrageous right now from my searching. I'm not on the up and up on video stuff. If you're streaming 4K it would depend on the codec big used and that could be rendered in HTML5 which means in large part in the CPU I think. I'm thinking your CPU could do it. Something like 8K is probably out of the question.

A 1060TI should work with your motherboard, but it's largely a case size thing. What kind of case do you have now? Make and model. Sending a PM on a link I found for a 1060TI.

Geezus. With Bitcoin jumping to over $23K these cards including the 2000 and 3000 series of GEFORCE are driving their prices way up. Stock is limited at most retailers such as Newegg and Amazon. Used "non name" GPUs are being bought by the desperate trying to mine Bitcoins in the hopes of finding just one coin. This is truly unbelievable.

I really don't understand it. When I looked into bitcoin mining or even mining Monero, I learned right away that the cost of power would be a factor along with the ever increasing difficulty as more and more cryptocurrency was mined. Now-a-days you join a mining pool and share in the wealth, but you're still going to get pennies. Unless I'm wrong and it is something that's viable.

I'd stay away from those non branded GPUs. One day I'm sure bitcoin will stabilize again. If not, that means it's probably linked to economic crap that I don't understand. I've read Bitcoin went up thanks to the China flu. And thanks to the China flu, the Chinese own Tencent mega corporation has saw an increase in sales for PUBG. AVcomparatives and a few others dropped Tencent from their whitelist. Why there would be whitlists in the first place is stupid. Now if we can just make GPUs in the U.S... Among a vast amount of other shit.

I bet, just bet with all the mining that the Chinese government does, this might be why. They have whole server farms for this. And there are companies all over the world you can buy into that mine.

Yes, and there's many other reasons at play here. The real risk takers are the one's who will gain and lose. They all get a rush out of bitcoin and uncertainty in general. I don't have that disposition.

In a local forum someone was selling a MSI 1060 GPU, heavily used. It was about half off retail or around $150 Canadian used. It was posted and gone in about 10 minutes. My local brand name (national retailer) not Best Buy is all out of stock of these GPUs.
