Green boxes during video streaming

In youtube, daily motion and other streaming sites (cf the french télévision catch-up site pluzz.fr) I get green an black squares partially or totally obliterating the video.
It usually happens on HQ ones and if I can lower the definition on it, it usually works.
It's the same on FF, IE, chrome, comodo. I've tried using only the 32 bit version IE but that doe'nt help.

Anybody got any ideas ?

This looks like damaged video ram to me.
That kind of artifacting is usually associated with a video processor or memory going bad.
Overheating and stress will only make it worse, which may be why lowering settings allows it to perform a little better.
My guess is even if you played standard definition for a long enough time for it to warm up the problem would appear there too.

could just be a low performing graphics card.

Performance level isn't really a concern, I have a old laptop with crummy intel graphics and it plays video fine. It just can't do 3d rendering

Granted, you've updated your graphics driver.....
Update your Adobe Flash Player to the latest version.

If that doesn't work.....while a video is playing, pause it.
Right click on the video, select Settings and Display.
Uncheck the "Enable hardware acceleration" box.
