I am working on an older MB, a Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3. I want to use Sata 3 for connecting my SSD and hard drive. The only onboard SATA 3 connections are GSATA using a Marvell controller. I have read these are not very good and not as fast as Intel ICH10.

Do I need to buy an expansion card? If so, can anyone recommend one?

ive heard there are some known issues with the marvel controllers
The only thing I'm sure about : if you have to choose between an Intel SATA port and a Marvell SATA port, choose the Intel port !

Yes. I have seen that as well. I have Intel sata 2 ports and Marvell sata 3 ports available. I guess I could just try them both and test.

You think the sata 2 intel ports would be run better than sata 3 Marvell? That really speaks volumes.
