GTA IV not working in Windows 7

I am having difficulty getting mt GTA IV to work properly and I have found many different fixes to resolve it but I'm not sure which one is most recent.
The first three times I tired it the game will run normally for about 15 minutes and shut off stating a "Fatal Error" (I don't have the code with me but I can include it later).
The last two times I tried it the game ran really choppy like I was online and had a ton of lag.
Is there a patch or fix for this issue? I am finding conflicting remedies.

If you install the game it will automatically install latest updates for it. It works well on Windows 7 64-bit.

Well you would know because before you play, you need to sign into 2 online addons, and one of them does the updates..

Oh...I installed the online social club thing but never actually logged in because I wasn't planning on playing online right away so I just exited it an ran the game.
Should I log into it and see if it updates?

I litterally just had this pc built so every driver etc is updated.
I will log into WindowsLive games to see if it updates.

When you say "play the game" do you mean in multiplayer mode? Because I haven't tried that. Also, do I have to be logged into the social club and windows live before hand? Does windows live just run in the background?

Windows live has me confused. I know I'm not doing something right and it is frustrating the hell out of me. At one point it had me log into what looked like windows live for xbox and at another point I logged in using my hotmail usernname and password because it would not accept the one I just created.

The same goes for the social club. I don't know what Im supposed to do when I'm there or how to find the multiplayer games.

What would happen if I uninstall and reinstall the game and create a new account for the social club and windows live? Does the social club and windows live attach the cd keycode to the registration somehow at which point it would tell me the cd code is already in use by another member?

before you uninstall you need to run the key de-register. This will unlock your serial from any accounts, then do a reinstall. then try make new accounts and see how that goes..
