GTA IV Won't Run

i'm having a bit of an odd problem that i haven't seen mentioned yet. i was fine installing under XP Compat, and even had the game running. i went to update Windows Live from within game when it asked me (which i found out later was not recommended). the update file couldn't access the exe because it said it was being used, even though it wasn't, so i had to cancel the update half way through. the game stopped working so i uninstalled and when i installed everything again...

social club launches, but as soon as i try to launch GTA4, the windows progress wheel starts spinning and then stops and it does nothing. no error or anything.

this is so frusterating. i've tried running it in every compat mode. nothing works.

Hi, mightymilk, and welcome to the forums.

Have you tried manually updating WLfor Games and then re-isntalling GTA IV?

ya that was the first thing i did on my second install. same problem

i think I had the same problem after install, but I just copied the GTA4 folder from my Vista install and it worked fine, actually after I installed it on 7 I clicked the application starter in my Vista install and it was running fine as well, might be worth a try for you if you are dual booting and have it installed on another partition.

I've actually had some problems at first with this game. What I had to do was set up 2 shortcuts one for "\RSGLauncher.exe" and another for "\LaunchGTAIV.exe" I have to first start Social club (RSgLauncher) then start LaunchGTAIV.exe and am running them in Win 7 compatability mode. If I click play from SOcial club nothing happens.

mightymilk GTA4 had capability problems even before windows 7. The port from console to PC didn't do so well for the game (technically)

I installed GTA4 using XP compatability mode. Then I downloaded the LIve installer and installed before running the game. Then set both "\RSGLauncher.exe" and "\LaunchGTAIV.exe" XP compatibility. Then i played using the social club in normal way. The game works fine for me..
I am using Win 7 build 7000 64 bit.
