GTX 285 Driver not loading on boot = hang at win statup

Hi Guys,

I am new to this forum. I just built my own pc:

CPU: Intel i7 950
Mobo: ASYS P6T SE
Vid: GTX 285 (BFG)
RAM: 8 GB Crucial Ballistix Tracer
OS: Win7 64bit Pro (legitimate copy)
Monitors: Viewsonic DVI, LG VGA
PSU: Dark Power Be Quiet 1200W

So this is not the first box I've built but it is the first time I have not been able to boot easily for so long. The symptoms are that it hangs at the windows logo on the start screen, most times. If I do a safe boot, then sometimes it will boot successfully afterwards. I can play Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, watch movies but opening a picture would cause a BSOD. I fixed the last symptom by reseating the card and installing the latest driver (195.62) while only the vga monitor is connected. It still hangs at the start screen though on a cold boot.

I have used the Win7 mem test to confirm it's not memory. I have then done a boot log (ntbtlog.txt) and I can see the following lines repeated as it tries and retries to load drivers:

Did not load driver @hal.inf,%acpi_amd64.devicedesc%;ACPI x64-based PC
Did not load driver @cpu.inf,%intelppm.devicedesc%;Intel Processor
... (more of the previous line)
Did not load driver @oem6.inf,%nvidia_dev.05e3.01%;NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285

This happened on the driver that came with the device too. I can tried repair installs and clean installs of my OS. I tried deleting the driver altogether and then letting windows load a driver for it and same result. Aside from sending the card into the manufacturer for testing, are there any ideas out there on what i can do?

Sadly, I am actually enjoying the challenge. Mostly because on the rare occasion I can boot normally and use my pc normally and leave it on for easy's sake. :)

Thanks in advance guys!

Hi there,

I tried viewing my memory dumps from the bsod's and all it said was that it couldn't read the dump but did reference the nvidia driver. I do have the latest chipset from last week. Will try the pnp in the bios. Can you explain why this will help me? Mostly so I can learn, not quaetioning the action. :)

OK so I did the pnp thing and it booted fine, but haven't tried a cold boot. Attached are two bsod .dmp's. I tried using windbg to read them and as I said, not much was able to be read by the app. Thanks for the help so far.

These drivers are older and need to be updated to the latest:

Code:
netr6164 netr6164.sys Fri Sep 28 09:37:32 2007
AsIO AsIO.sys Mon Dec 17 04:11:49 2007
So install the latest network driver for Win 7 11/20/2009 from here:

Realtek

I don't know about the other one. You can Google on it. I've seen it before on a few bsods. I think it may be a motherboard utility driver.

Check here:

If you have further crashes after updating this, let us now and attach a new rar.

If you want to learn a little, see the top link in the Crashes and Debug section of the forum.

Thanks for the ideas. Will do them immediately. Hopefully these are the silver bullets. The pnp didn't fix it but it seems like a good thing to have eneabled. :)

Hi, just one last question. How does the LAN and utility drivers have anything to do with the video card and cpu drivers not loading in the boot log? I know I'm asking to be spoon fed but if you could just indulge me I would be very appreciative.

They're drivers on the system. That's all that's needed for them to effect proper operation for the computer. If they're incompatible or known problem causers, then they must be updated. If the issue persists after doing so, then troubleshooting can go elsewhere.

Can't hurt to ensure latest bios is installed too.

That makes sense. Asus seems to have a bios for the American version of Win7 but as I am using the UK version none come up in the search on the site and trying to use the American one gives me a wrong os version error. Will do that as soon as they come out with one though. Thanks again, will update you when I find out where this asio.sys is. It seems to be audio related so I might update the audio drivers to try and fix it.

Hi There,

No go. I flashed my bios too. Asus have a bios update utility now available for the UK people. I have attached my most recent boot log. So in addition to the bios and the lan update I also updated the audio drivers too to try and fix the asio.sys driver. As you can see by the file, it seems that there are a few drivers that fail to load and are then retried repeatedly. The only time it doesn't boot into windows is on a cold boot. Safe mode works and if I restart after safemode it usually works too.

Give it a clean install and it should be fixed.

Sorry about the gap. I have been crazy busy. Will do this tonight and re-add all drivers. Hopefully this is the silver bullet.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi There,

I did a re-install last night and thought we had it licked. It seems to restart perfectly fine but a cold boot still causes a freeze at the windows start logo. What I did this time around is not to load anything from the cd's that came with the parts. Instead I let windows 7 update what it felt like. Then I did the 3 optional updates (vid card, lan and monitor). Not sure if that was wise, in hind sight I was going to not do the vid card one but it passed the windows compatibility. I might roll it back and see what happens. Not sure what else to do. I think the card works fine because when I do the restart after a safe mode everything boots and runs as normal including video, games and pictures. Very weird.

So I've noticed my guru has been expelled. As a follow up, it still still not working after an 2 reinstalls and everu driver I can find. I am going to send the card back to the manufacturer for testing.
