I read up on reviews of the R9 and many people have issues with system shutdown and unnecessary card heat even while idling. Think I'll pass on that... :/

R9 in general are very hot running cards. They also are not very efficient as the 900 line atm. They 390 is a slightly rebadged 290 series card but they have binned there parts so that they are the ones AMD finds can withstand the higher clocks that the 390 ships with, you can flash a 290's bios to reflect its 390 equivalent brother and it will work but not as efficiently as the parts will be struggle or soon fails since they were never binned for that stress. I would recommend a 970 myself for what games you want to play and since you can only be single card anyways (SLI has issues too). Also a 290x will be cheaper now with pretty much same performance at 1080p if that is what your running I run 1440p and don't even fill my 6GB of vram.

I run 1680x1050 max and thought a 970 would be a good way to go. But I'm open for a 290 also. As you know though, I only have one PCIe x16 slot so only one can win.

Get the 970 it will be colder, quieter, and pretty much eat anything at that resolution. Your slower component will be the fx-6300 but it should hold its own with the 970.

I thought the 6300 was fast... (not like an 8 core though) it's been full speed ahead so far, but then again I haven't played games much.

Oc'ed it has tons of head room but stock not so much as say a 8350, that being said it is not a slouch and i'm was just saying that the 970 is a good fit with it. You should have no trouble with it and it will generate way less heat then a 8350.

I didn't find it offensive, the statement had me confused. I don't plan on overclocking though, not even 0.1GHz. I spent too much on it (just under 100) to risk it frying... ^^; But comparing a Core 2 Duo to it, that one definitely IS a slouch in comparison to the 6300 xD

Yeah I understand, I just didn't want you to suddenly think you needed to spend like 800 on a old card lol.

Well, if it supplied unlimited VRAM and had no TDP, maybe I would xD But the most I'm comfortable spending on one is no more than 340, but 360 is my highest. And I see that most 970s are around 310 - 330, at least on PCPartPicker's lists.

That is nice card many of my friends have that one. Also I thought you were someone else who had found a 670 for 800 and was going to buy that so I was warning you so you can ignore my comment about it above (wrong thread). Also I agree with AddRam if you get a 970 you really should have at least a 700-800w PSU. My current setup can pull 640w from the wall at load. So you would be close.

Don't bother. You ideally should always buy RAM in kits, and 8GB is more than enough for gaming. That money could go towards something else you really need, only upgrade from 8GB to 16Gb when you're bored and have nothing left to upgrade.

My RAM came in a two stick kit, 4 gigs a piece. If I shouldn't get more now, what was that one guy saying about:

Having more memory also helps the video card, I would seriously consider adding another set of Gskill 2 x 4 GB, the same exact set you have now.

I mean, it makes sense that it helps overall, but I'm not certain about RAM doing any high end graphical work... Or does it actually help out somewhat? (No offense is meant to anyone, I just need to get my facts straight so I'm on the same page)

I believe you'd have to have windows 7 pro and 32gb of ram before it starts to happen :/
