Gypsum dust in computer

Hello,

I guess I have a fairly high potential for doing stupid things. My office is directly connected to my bedroom - no door. I am redoing a plaster ceiling in the bedroom. I failed to close off the office or even cover the computer. I use it with the motherboard exposed. The CD/DVD and hard drive don't fit in the case.

Has anyone ever cleaned gypsum dust from a computer? It's still working, but I am afraid that it is going to overheat...

Thanks,

Phredtx

Hi,
I usually take my Computer apart once a year and blow out all the dust. Of cause i don't have Gypsum dust in it, but if it is still dust and not permanently attached to anything, it should come out with compressed air

You could also try using a very, VERY soft brush to remove any stuck on dust. Something along the lines of a cosmetic brush would probably be soft enough. If it has been used, it can be washed and dried first.
Be gentle with it too.

If after a thorough dusting by you, if the computer seems to operate and/or smell "funny" -- take it to a local computer fixit place and let them do a thorough cleaning and testing. I had both laptops into a local computer fixit place for just such a cleaning and testing. That was worth it -- they cost $1100 and $1600 respectively.

Hi,

I used some compressed air-brush propellant to blow out the dust. If you try this be sure and turn off the computer, de-energize the system, unplug the power, monitor, etc.; then let it sit for half an hour or so to let everything cool down. I took the fan off first and cleaned it manually. While it off I blew out the cooling fins. Be careful... (This worked very well)
