Halo 2 Problem

I have been trying to play Halo 2 for the past few days. When I play, about 50% the refresh rate of the game is about every .3 seconds. Another 40% of the time the refresh rate is about every second. The other 10% of the time it's normal. The sound is fine. I am absolutely sure I have the minimun requirements for it. I have a Dell XPS M1530(windows 7 professional 64bit) with a 2.0 dual core processor, 3gb of Ram, a 320gb hard drive at 7200rpm, and a 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT video card. I am upgrading my laptop to 8gb of Ram. Will that help? or is there another problem I don't know about?
Update: I used FRAPS and when I played, it would be at 40 fps. Then when about 3 other people are within 10 ft of me(in game) the fps go to about 10(really bad) then it does something wierd, It'll move for a second then freeze for a second, over and over, then it will go back to normal unill this cycle repeats.

Halo 2 has known issues with windows 7...
I have seen this pop up several times.
Try to search and see if you can find anything,

That game has serious issues on a PC, I tried to play before with my specs, it couldn't run smoothly. Ridiculous, it's the game problem, not your PC's.

I play Halo 2 all the time on my PC, I have zero, as in absolutely no problems what so ever. No patch required. GTX480 with the newest drivers works perfectly for me.

I believe one issue was cause by games for Microsoft...
Try uninstalling everything, including games for microsoft.
Install the latest GfM (games for microsft.
Upadte it.
Install Halo 2.

Try that.
Hopefully it works.
