Halo 2 refuses to install - can't find performance information

Hi,

I just bought the retail dvd of Halo 2 and I'm trying to install it on Windows 7.

The install pops up a message box that says
"This computer's performance information has not been created.

You should create performance information on this computer before running Halo 2 for Windows Vista.

Click Start, Control Panel, System and Maintenance, and Performance Information and Tools."

and the installation stops when I hit 'Run' anyway.

But I have done a performance test to create a score of 5.9. I have a quad core i7 with 12 gig of ram and a 2gig Nvidia graphics card. It seems Halo 2 just doesn't recognise the performance information.

I've searched but I haven't found anyone else who has had this problem.

Any help appreciated.

(As a programmer, I can't believe Microsoft seems to have locked this game into Vista-specific requirements - that violates the basic future-proofing principles that Microsoft has been espousing to programmers for years. Sheesh.)

This is the first time I see this problem and I am baffled as well... I am sure you used the "Run as Admin" feature? also tried the compatibility mode?

Yes to both, in every combination of 'Run as Admin' and compatibility mode for Vista, Vista SP1 and Vista SP2. The same result every time.

Was Halo 2 a Vista Native game or was it out when XP was out? Just to know, not that it will make a difference on your problem.

Have you tried updating your drivers? if nothing happens at least you know you got the latest one! ;) :D

Halo 2 was made for Vista only - it probably would have worked on XP but Microsoft seems to have been trying to force people to upgrade to Vista, so they made it impossible to install on XP.

I already have the latest drivers, but that wouldn't cause this problem anyway - it seems to be more a problem of Halo 2 being poorly written in that it relies on OS-version specific configurations. A lot of people have been completely unable to install Halo 2 on Windows 7 because of the game's Vista-specific requirements, although the problem I'm having is a new one .

Halo 2 was made shortly after Vista was created. It uses DirectX10 and XP is unable to use DirectX10. I've been told by friends that some game cracking groups have made the game work with DirectX9 so that it would work with Windows XP (and I have absolutely no idea how the hell they managed that).

It was one of Microsoft's dumber schemes to make people buy Vista if you ask me.

I had the game for a while (the actual box version), and I installed it on my Windows 7 just fine. I uninstalled it though after I beat the game. It was kinda boring after the I beat it the first time. Just not one of the game's I'd replay.

I had the game for a while (the actual box version), and I installed it on my Windows 7 just fine.

That's what I've seen in searching for solutions - some people have installed and run Halo 2 on Windows 7 without any problem, while others have been unable to at all, or have had to perform hacks (like disabling and renaming the Windows 7 cryptographic services while installing the game).

A lot of the problems seem to stem from Halo 2's reliance on specific versions of system files or applications like 'Games for Windows Live' version 1, but it's all a matter of guesswork and trial and error to find out what is causing a particular problem - the installer and the game provide no help in identifying the cause.

It looks like I've just acquired another useless dvd to gather dust on my games shelf lol.

Thanks for the help anyway.

So wierd, microsoft states it works with windows 7 here Windows 7 Compatibility for Microsoft Halo 2 version 1.01: Microsoft. Drivers, Updates, Downloads

Have you updated your windows 7,try updating windows 7 to sp1 if you haven't already.

Haha, well I suppose it is compatible in the sense that it does work on some Windows 7 installations, it's just very buggy. The 'solution' linked on that page is a patch for after the game is installed, it doesn't help if the game won't install in the first place.

And yes, I'm using Windows 7 SP1 with all the updates.

I've also tried disabling my antivirus software but that didn't help either.

I'm reluctant to start hacking the operating system as others have had to do. I'd rather not run the game than mess up a functioning Windows installation.

But I don't think I'll ever buy another game from Bungie again.

Yeah I wouldn't want to mess with my operating systems files either.Just leads to problems like crashes and bsod's and so on. I don't know what other thing could fix this :( this is a very rare issue and I Google searched this and found 3 people with the same problem but no solution since I was running out of ideas.I was hoping I could find you a solution but I haven't found one or been able to think of what else you could try.The only other thing I could think of is to explore the cd's contents and try to install it from in there by clicking on the startup launcher and running as admin or making a seconded temporary windows 7 admin profile and try installing from in there but idk if it will work:huh:,if I can think of anything else I'll post it.

You could also try using Nero (or another burning program), and try to make an image file and use that in Daemon Tools. It's what I do with all of my CD's DVD's when I get them. I'm not putting my disc in the drive every time I'm playing it. But this might help you.
