Hi there
Any feelings over the relative merits of these programs for ripping DVD's etc to MP4 files for viewing on my Samsung S4 Mobile phone.

My gut feel is that the Handbrake program is more flexible, allows also to copy sub titles without "burning then in" so they can be viewed on or off at will and the latest version does good conversion.

I used to like Dvd Catalyst but although the interface is slightly easier it seems more restricted - for example it doesn't handle sub titles so well - burns them in etc.

The Samsung S4 can output to external screens too at 1080p HD so I start watching the movie on a train / plane, and then finish it using the HDMI output to Hotel TV / external monitor - conversion is more than adequate for these size TV's.

(Note for commercial DVD's you need to remove encryption / regionalisation -- AnyDVD is a decent commercial program that does this -- use it to burn to an ISO and then mount either with a Virtual ISO mounter or Windows 8 / 8.1 built in virtual ISO handling system) and then do your rip).

AnyDVD is a legal freely available commercial program (at least where I live) so I hope it's not against the rules saying what the program does.

Cheers
jimbo

I use Handbrake and AnyDVD to backup my DVD's to a HDD. I still need a lot of practice because sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Not saying the programs are hard to use but I must be doing something wrong.
