This is the case with most christian holidays these days - at first they are a day off (in e.g. Germany Monday is also a holiday). But Easter is still relatively moderate - think of everything going on at Christmas. In Europe we also celebrate Pentecost (2 days too) which does not seem to be on the US calendar.
