Hard drive could not detached after format from computer

I am using Windows 7 home premium to format a hard drive. After format finished, I detach the hard drive and Windows could not boot up. A blue screen with errors code keep on recycling. If I attach the hard drive, Windows boot up normally. If there any method I could detach the hard drive from the computer?

I tried the disk management to assign and un-assign drive letter but still doesn't help, same occurance.
I am using the SATA port in my computer to format hard drive.

Hi,

It sounds as if part of the boot files are on the 2nd disk......but I don't know how they could survive a format
