I have a one terabyte hard drive that is failing. my system consistently hangs. failed Seagate hard drive test. would I be able to clone this drive in its current state. if so can I clone the OS and programs only. my drive is 90 percent full. I have a Western Digital 1 terabyte drive that I could use however I would like to install a solid state drive do a lot ofintense video editing . any suggestions tips recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I've seen reports that cloning can work on failing drives, but that wouldn't be my highest priority.

I'd first concentrate on getting data (not Windows) copied off of the drive to any other drive---external, another internal, a USB thumb drive, DVDs, whatever. Pronto.

Worry about Windows, the SSD, reinstalling programs later.

I woudn't write anything more to the drive if at all possible.

Cloning is typically done for the entire drive. Imaging can be done on a partition basis. I'm guessing you have a typical install with only a C partition and possibly System Reserved. Worry about cloning later. Get the data backed up (copied) elsewhere.

I had a Seagate suddenly fail a few weeks back and everything I tried failed as well. Ended up sending it to a professional data recovery service, who wanted $1000 to repair/recover it -- I refused and they sent it back to me. I trashed it.

You could try using Recuva to retrieve files and folders. If that doesn't work, you could try RecoverMyFiles. It's free to download and try, but you have to buy a license to do the actual recovery.

Thanks guys, I was able to use Seagate DOS utility to recover bad sectors, seems to be working as usual. In the process of transferring files to backup. Is this Assn indication my drive is failing or is it fixed now. Should I prepare to replace my drive reinstall os our clone. I read that cloning could also clone the problems associated with my failing drive

Highly probable the drive is failing and needs to be replaced.

All files of any importance need at least 1 backup copy, 2 or more backup copies if the files are of particular importance. Having no backups is asking for trouble. Data recovery cannot be relied on.
