It appears that I have one more drive headed for a long rest. When I started hearing some clicks, I used a stethoscope to locate which drive was croaking, and I was somewhat surprised by what I heard. In addition to the clicking, I could hear the drive revving up like a race car, only to terminate in a click, and then it would start over again.

I seriously doubt it, but before performing the last rites on it, I was wondering if there might be any possible cure to the illness?

Not long term, but if you need to get data off it as a LAST RESORT ONLY. You can put it in a plastic bag and put the bag in the freezer. The contraction because of the cold may give you a few more starts to get data off it.

I had 5 go in 18 months so have the HD mfrs on speed dial\

I always thought this was the silliest sounding thing when I first heard it, but ...

It has indeed worked for me in the past.

I had a drive that would just click a few times and that was it. The deep freeze got it working just long enough to retrieve the DATA I wanted.

No, the drive only contained backup images, and since I'm about to have to do a clean install for a hardware upgrade, those will be useless anyway, so I won't waste a freezer bag on it.

I've also had a similar failure rate on my hard drives. The only drives that I have ever had any luck with were Maxtors, but since Seagate has gobbled them up, I have begun considering hard drives as consumables. I've have had ink cartridges outlast some of my drives.

You could do this, but the cost is about the same as a new HD.

No thanks, I assume that the cost that you mentioned was for buying a new logic board for the drive, but it is not worth spending anything on. Besides, from what I have read, the logic board is really only for getting the drive to work long enough for recovery, not as a true fix, and whether even that much success will occur is questionable.

I'm curious, that youtube video's audio had a very strong echo to it, making it very difficult to understand. Was it the same for you, or do you suppose that it had to do with some sound setting on my PC?

The RMA for my 1TB drive arrived today, and I was pleasantly surprised that they sent me a 1.5TB in it's place, and it appears to be new rather than re-certified. I'm running it through HD Tune now, so I have my fingers crossed. In any case, they did far better than Seagate on RMAing...I may stick with WDC for a while.

I'm still in the process of phasing out my Seagates and Maxtors. Once I have done my computers will remain Seagate/Maxtor free.

I've always preferred WD over Seagate and Maxtor (which are just flat out horrible), but recently I must say the Samsung F series drives have been very good to me. I have two F3's and two F4's... all great.

I have heard others make favorable comments about Samsung drives, but I'm reluctant to change product lines very easily. If I have further problems with WDC, I may try them, but so far I'm satisfied with WDC.

When I first got my 1TB FAEX drives, I was quite unhappy about how noisy that they are, and when I found that 2 out of 3 of these drives that I had, had bad clusters, I was about to put WDC in the same category with Seagate. However, the 1.5TB has neither of these problems. I didn't hear a single noise from it during a 5 hour scan using HD Tune, so I will probably continue with this model for internal drives for the time being.
