Hard Drive Locks Up

I have 4 partitioned hard drives all but one function properly. The troubled one locks up and I've placed all power options back to standard and have run a memory check which indicated normal. I also changed the batteries in the key board and mouse. Are there any Windows 7 tweaks that may help? Could this be a indication that the hard drive is on it's last legs?

What do you mean by the hard drive locking up? Does it stop turning, or working at all, or does the PC freeze when accessing it?

I also don't know what is meant by lock up.
Is this hard drive internal or external?

I also don't know what batteries in mouse and keyboard or a memory test have to do with hard drive with a problem.

Please explain in exact detail what your problem is.

The screen locks up the mouse cursor does not move, there is no circle indicating a process. The drive is internal it is the #2 drive in a tower. The reason I changed the battery was I thought the mouse had something to do with it. I try ctrl/alt/delete and nothing happens.

What are you doing on your computer when this black screen happens?

Could you post all the security programs you use?
Also could you post all the Cleanup, Tuneup, or Registry programs you use.

What other things do you have plugged into your computer?

Example:
Phones
Printers
Camera
External drives
Head phone ect.

Hello WaltB32!

Do you have an OS on that drive or is it just personal files? Do you have programs on it?

By saying “lock up” I think you mean that each time you try to access the drive your system freezes and needs a hard reset to run smoothly again, am I correct?

If this is the case, the drive may just have a problem/damage thus by trying to access it, the system can't perform that action and freezes.

Can you post a screenshot of your Disk Management and Device Manager? What make and model is the drive?

I would suggest you first using a back up software to save the data from that drive onto another one, before troubleshooting any further.

I would also suggest removing Norton Tune Up tool.
Hopefully using it hasn't done some serious damage.
A Norton Tuneup tool with Bitdefender installed I'm guessing they could also be arguing with each other.

Windows 7 does not need or want Tune Up programs.

I checked with Bitdefender and the only software they suggested that is not agreeable with their program is Spybot.

You're welcome! :)

As it looks like, because of the freezing and unresponsiveness, the hard drive is damaged. If you've tried it with different cables and ports, and it still does the same thing, I would suggest you take it to a professional.

Good luck!

Windows 7 does not need or want Tune Up programs.

I'm using Norton Utilities on the other drives with no issues, it cleans the registry, and deletes a great deal
of wasted MB space, I've used this product for over 12 years and it has saved my systems numerous times. I am not going to take that off my program list.

If you take notice I suggested not demand you to remove it. It's your call because it's your system.

I know of no TuneUP tool that is needed for Windows 7.
Any tool that cleans Windows 7 registry is in question.
Of course this is just my opinion but you will find that many members on this forum have the same opinion.

Your call, happy computing.
