hard drive not detected

hi i had a problem with the detection of my seagate external 500 GB hard drive today morning..till now it was working and being detected fine. suddenly this problem arose. I've been trying since morning.. device manager shows the hard drive working properly status.. but i cant find the drive in 'computer'. i even tried control panel-admin tools- comp management-disk mangement but my disc is not detected there too.but the light in the hard drive remains on.. my computer detects my 8 gb flash drive. please help me soon.. i have important stuff for my exams stored in there and i forgot to take a back up thinking i would do that later.. i have windows 7 ultimate installed in my laptop.. thanks in advance..

Have you tried powering off Ext HD & plugging in a different USB post & powering ON again?

my hard drive cant be powered off. it gets its power from the port.. i've tried all ports.. and also tried restarting my computer a number of times.. still not detected.. used to work just fine till morning with the same settings..
