Hard Drive Spin? Lots of moving around.

Just wondering why the HD seems to make a lot of noise.

I have two identical drives, one in Win 7, one in OSX, the windows HD (both fresh and newly formatted), seems to be constantly reading making that errrrr.rr.rr.rrrrrrr sound. If I boot to OS X it's relatively quiet. The defrag is less than 1%.

Thoughts?

Personally, I am finding I am using the PC quite a lot lately, much more than the Apple. Seems like they have a hit on their hands. Am very happy about the experience so far. No problems to report except for this and the occasional random slowing down yet CPU usage shows nothing running.

Hi Composer

You can use the Resource Monitor to check what is using the drive most when it does that.
2 ways to access it - Ctrl Panel, Admin Tools, Performance Monitor, and then click "Open Resource Monitor", or Ctrl Pnl - Performance Info tools, click Advanced Tools on the left, then Resource Monitor.
Click on the top of the Read, or Write columns to change the order to the most used or least used first and see what's using the disk more.
Then let us know what your top users are and we may be able to help.

I found the same happened with me after install, just disabled 'windows search' and that stopped the constant disk access.

i had similar problem, found that disabling the "HD sleep timer" under advanced power settings stopped this from happening for me.

Even when i wasnt around the pc i could hear the HD fire up under the default power settings.... this would not be the system drive, but others connected in pc. Almost started to sound like the HD was failing. After a diag check, there were no problems found. Turning that feature to "never" has "fixed" the problem.

hi, i too have the never ending spinning harddrive problem so i disabled windows search and the hd sleep timer to no avail, under the resource montor/disk, system and svchost.exe are by far bothering my hard drive the most is there anything else i can try to get my hard drvie to stop spinning for just a few seconds?

should i try setting the hard drive timer to 1 minute or would that make my computer a zombie?
