Hard drive suddenly turns off o_Ô

Hello everybody.


I recently bought a second hard drive for my machine. The previous one I had is now a secondary drive, meaning I am booting from the new one and using the older one for data storage.

I have noticed that for some weird reason, the older drive sudddenly stops working when I'm not using it! I can clearly hear how it stops completely as if I had turned off the entire machine. When I try to access it to see what's wrong, it just turns on before I can diagnose it. Is this normal? Is the second drive about to die?

It's not normal. Do you have Advanced Power Setting set to turn off the drive? Try a drive diagnostic for your brand drive.

Well, the hard drive did fail somehow a couple weeks ago. The Win7 partition suddenly disappeared from it after a power shortage. The Linux, partition, however, is still alive and kickung so I decided to get a new HD and move the information there before it's too late.

I would deep six the failed drive and get a 2nd new one if you have your data from it.
Take it apart and salvage the magnets, they are fun to play with and very strong.

That doesn't explain why it shuts down. did you try anything presented here?

Hello everybody. I gave it all this time and nothing bad has happened. The problem was what Golden said: the Windows 7 feature. I disabled it and now everything is fine.

PS. I will, however, get a new drive and make a copy of this one, just in case.
