Hard Drive Temperature..

Hey everyone, just curious if 45c is too hot for a laptop hard drive.

I'm using a program and its warning me about the heat saying to back-up data blah blah blah.. its been like that (heat wise) ever since I bought the laptop.

Well it wasn't a program specifically for that, but I was checking out this program called EnhanceMySe7en.

Also Fedora 11 claims I have a failing hard drive (failed to respond to SMART tests, but anything thats not Fedora based doesn't say its failing). :S

I would say this is very good temp for your hard drive.
Few years ago Google published special raport about HD failures it is still available as .pdf document here:

The optimal temperature for HD is from 35C to 46C, in this range the AFR% is the smallest.

Thanks Then why do things keep telling me my HDD is too hot! (or failing) I realize I have a crappy hard drive, but its no reason for the software to lie to me!

The softwares are made by humans
If developer set the critical temp range for HD from eg. 44C up then you see what happens.
Don't worry about it.

And fedora telling me my HDD is failing? o.o I remember it saying that it wasn't responding to its SMART tests. :S

Sorry I misreading your previous post. About failing disk SMART raport should tell you the truth.
Did you check SMART under Windows (eg. HD Tune)?
Can you post here your screenshot with SMART?

HD Tune (non-Pro) shows my HD Temp as 49C.. What program do you suggest I use to get the SMART Status (for the screenie to upload?)

EDIT: 51C now, though thats likely because I'm having HD Tune do a quick scan (which is slow).

Check the SMART status in HD Tune 2.55 (it is free) tab Health and post here screenshot.
I see that your temp in every minute is higher... not good 51C is high temp for hd.

Well under the Info tab it has S.M.A.R.T checked as supported features.

I'd say your disk is health but if your HD temp reach 51C - it's not good. Menu start > enter RESMON in search field

I'd say your disk is health but if your HD temp reach 51C - it's not good. Its always on a kitchen table because its the only place I get a signal. =P

Most all prebuilt system's i've seen with failing(overheating) hd's, the HD's are mounted on their sides/front, instead of bottom, this causes them to heatup faster, stay hot longer, and eventually die much sooner. A properly installed drive might last a steady 5-10 yrs, an improperly installed drive on its side (of the exact same model) might get 3 max. There arent many drives specifically made to be mounted on their side/front..

check the case for airflow around the hd, if its sitting in an enclosed area the ambiant tempature will eventually start baking it.

but on your screen from HDTune is 49C
Did you do SMART and printscreen in the same time?

It is really strange... when did you observe that HD temp is so high? When you bought brand new laptop the HD temp was lower or the same?

My hard drive is located in the back-right, right next to the 12-Cell Battery. I could not say its the most.. air-flow-efficient but the bigger battery lifts it up in the rear giving better air-flow.

If SMART is not enabled in the bios you will get that warning.

Also I think that the drive temp is fine. I have a RaptorX 150Gb sitting on my desk on it's side right now hooked up through an SATA to USB kit and it gets hot enough to in some places to burn your fingers if you touch it. I attached coolers to both my RaptorX drives because of the high heat they generate.

Its a HP Laptop. They pretty much put the BIOS in lockdown.

SMART is enabled in BIOS though, unable to be changed. My guess is its a driver thing with Fedora based distro's. Since Fedora also hates my WIFI why shouldn't it hate my hard drive either?
