Hard drive

i have probably put this query on the wrong board sorry if i have , i want to get data off a hard drive from my previous laptop computer, ive looked at the cable thingy what i need but im getting confused as there seems to be different types , on one it says 2;5 is a standard 44 pin, then one says if it is a sata drive, i want if possible to be able to put the data onto a desktop by using usb so how do i find out it is a 2;5 pin etc, i would be gratefull if someone is able to advise me
