you can add partitions to the root without losing data on the root...

The answer is YES, If you remove a partiion, any drives in that partition will no longer be available and your data will be gone.

Suggest that you copy all the data that you wish to save to another drive or an external USB disk.

One thing is that it won't let yo remove the active partition like your C drive.

Doing a format to a HDD does not remove or over-write any of the data on the HDD at all.

Please post a maximized snip of Windows disk management with a complete list of what is on what partition.

   Note

In the Windows start menu right click computer and click manage, in the left pane of the "Computer Management" window that opens click disk management and post a maximized snip of that.
