You should try A4Tech's X7 Gaming Mouse Pad which comes with reversible sides and a tray. 1 side is hard and other is more harder should cost $10 and trust me it's a good medium-sized gaming mouse pad.

I'm no gamer but I have seen mouse pads sell for over $40.00. I'm somewhat puzzled how this helps one with gaming.
If a harder gaming pad is needed just use the desk you are sitting at.

It depends on the mouse tbh. Some mice are fine on cloth pads, others on hard plastic or metal.
Some pads simply track better depending on the mouse and the DPI you use. A desk is okay, but over time they damage the mouse skates, causing scratches and grooves.
My favourite pad is my Roccat Alumic. One side is "smoother" while the other is more precise and better for FPS.

Bloody Big Grin
It has a nice surface and is great for its price it is a bit bigger than a A4 piece of paper but I love it when i'm playing with mouse and keyboard the mouse slides over it perfectly.
